I just finished reading Proud Promise--Collectors Grade's book on french semi-automatic service rifle development.  Do any C&R vendors still have them?  Or are they pretty much a private party to private party or gun show thing now?

I bought one from Century and one from SOG around the turn of the last century.  They haven't been at the wholesalers since then.  They've been cheap compared to other stuff.

Thanks.  I'll keep my eyes open for a deal.  I did a Google search and found THIS for $525  Unfortunately, it also says "This listing has been closed"

Dried up sometime ago.  Had a chance at one for $250 about three years ago.  Still kicking myself on that one.

What few you do see at the shows are priced beyond my interest level.

True.  LOL.  I've already blown the toy budget for the month, anyway...

You really need to be careful about the .308 converted  49/56's. Due to the extra 12,000PSI that the .308 produces over the 7.5 French. In many rifles, this causes extraction problems which requires a very specialized reword (many people and gunsmiths have ruined rifles attempting). Even then, after repair, they can still be finicky.

Not to mention that those conversions were done by (and this would be a great place for a dancing, drunken monkey animation if I had one) Century Arms.  Pull the barrel, cut off somewhere between a 1/4 or 1/8th of an inch, run a (hopefully sharp, but probably not).308 reamer in and slap the barrel back on.  So if you get a chance at one, shooting it, or at the very least, looking at the chamber with a very bright light is a must.  I have an unconverted one and love it.

By the way, I have an unconverted one too...

And I feel the same way about it...
