| I "should" be receiving my C&R in the mail anytime now and am wanting to purchase an Enfield but Am torn between two models the No1mk3 and the No4mk1. Besides the difference of the look of the front of the rifle and the age. What are the differences I looked up info on surplusrifles.com and wikipedia and didnt find any info on the differences. Surplus does say some minor changes were made from the No1 to the No4 but did not mention anything specific. So basically im asking which in your opinion is the better of the two and also which mfg location is the best to have it from? Ive read a lot that the Canadian ones are far better than the ones from jolly of england. Thank you in advance |

The Bolt on the No4 is slightly longer. The sites on the No4 are much better, the rear peep sight is on the back of the receiver as opposed to open sights infront of the action on an MKIII. The longer sight window does increase accuracy. Trigger is better on the No4, and as you go from mk1, 1*, 1/2, 1/3, more trigger improvements took place. As far as the Longbranch rifles being better, they do seem to be more accurate. But, Canada was not being bombed! jp |

The changes between a No1, and a No4 are fairly substantial. Few parts will interchange between the two. In brief, the No4 has a stronger receiver, heavier barrel, longer sighting radius and is simpler to make than the earlier No1. The North American made versions tend to be finished a little better, but they were not made past WW2, and do not seem to shoot any better. In true ARFCOM fashion, I would reccomend getting both, as well as a No5. (and a nice L42A1 if you can!) The No4 has the greater accuracy potential of the two, but the older No1's were no slouch if you get a good one. Obtaining Ian Skennerton's book is probably the best starting place if you intend to start collecting Lee-Enfield rifles. |

Thank you for the responses. Im not going to be a collector of the Enfield line. I just have some rifles that I want for my collection/shooting purposes. They include an Enfield, K31, 98k, and hopefully someday the 1903. I already have a nagant m44 and I might get a 91/30 but who knows. The wife doesnt like my expensive hobby |
