I got a 'bubba' Carcano from a family member today after Thanksgiving dinner. I've been looking on the internet to see what it used to be, but I'm not having that much success.

On the barrel at the receiver are the following markings:

Left side: 'MS in a circle', a crown over a shield with a cross?, OR-N, 8839
Top: Cal 6.5, ROMA2
Right side: MA??????, 918, FP

There is also a star on the rear part of the receiver where the bolt comes out.

Any Ideas?

I'd ask that same question in the Gunboards Carcano forum.

The Italians had an accuracy marking for rifles that shot quite well at proofing.  To the untrained eye, it appears as crossed rifles with a bullseye behind it.

Has the barrel been shortened?  I appears to be 1918 manufacture.

Unfortunately, long Carcani stocks are tough to find.
