Tomorrow I will be picking up a Mosin Nagant M38 and a Yugo SKS I purchased from Classic Arms from my local FFL (I got impatient while waiting for my C&R to come in the mail). Is it absolutely imperative that I check the headspace on these rifles? I don't have any gauges at the moment. If so, can I suffice by just getting the field guage, rather than all three? I am on a limited budget so I want to justify every purchase. I also value my face and hands so if it is absolutely necessary, I will go ahead and get one, I was just curious as to how many of you verify the headspace before use. |
Most people recommend to do it. Personally, I don't when buying new firearms. It is very rare that the headspace is off on a new firearm. If it was at any time rebuilt and has a new bolt or barrel/chamber then I would suggest you check it. Otherwise, I don't think so. |

I am in the exact same boat as you with new rifles - I don't even bother. However, on old surplus stuff I guess I am paranoid about it since I am new to the C&R game. I am an ugly duckling but I still would prefer not to dork myself up any more than normal! I went ahead and got a Forster 7.62x54R Field Gage to be done with it, especially since I will definitely be purchasing more Mosins in the future. Thanks for the input! |
