| I was given an old Mosin a couple of years a go. I would like to get it up and running. I have done some research and it started life as a Dragoon in 1905 at the arsenal that begins with an I ( cant remember how to spell it). It still has the original stock but it looks like it has been eaten by a beaver. The hanguard is a replacement. This is a bummer as the original handguard apparently had the sight distances stamped in the wood. I think the replacement is a 91/30 handguard. The bolt is a Remington. There is not a lot of finish left on this thing and the last 3 inches of the barrel exterior are pitted. The bore is quite good and the rifling sharp. I am thinking of getting a 91/30 stock and it needs a new floorplate latch. These will probably run me about 50 bux shipped. I may get a cleaning rod to finish it out. I can shoot it with the original stock but it is a very ugly thing. Problem is for the price of the replacements I can probably just about buy on of the 91/30s that AIM has. Is it worth it to try to get this old lady shooting and looking decent? |

People will go nuts if you do what you propose to a 1905 Dragoon. Just keep it and get a cheap rearsenalled 91/30 to shoot. Dennis Jenkins

I don't understand. What would he be doing that is so bad? All he said is that he wants to replace the stock and floorplate latch so he can shoot it. He didn't say anything about refinishing. What he proposes to do is totally reversable. All he'd have to do is put the original parts back on. What is so terrible about that? Of course like he said he could almost just buy one of the many re-arsenaled M91/30's on the market right now for the price of the replacement parts. I think he should go ahead and buy a cheap re-arsenaled M91/30 anyway because you can never have too many mil-surps. |

Izhevsk, just don't ask me to pronounce it. ;) Is it worth it to try to get this old lady shooting and looking decent? There was a Remington-made Mosin on Gunboards recently that went for over $1000. It might be worth it to see if there's anything about yours that makes it rare and perhaps valuable to a collector. If that was the case and you just want a shooter, you might be able to sell your rifle for what two AIM or Big5 Mosins would cost you. I have a Finn 91/30 that was built from an 1894 Chatterault (French) receiver. The barrel is a 1944 Tikka, and the stock is a heavy Finn. I decosmofied it and put maybe 50 rounds down the pipe. The barrel bands keep coming loose as does the cleaning rod. It also shoots very high. I'm going to sell that one to someone who wants it, because I don't want to shoot it and risk messing it up, nor correct the things about it that make it a troublesome shooter. With that money, I can score two Mosins for shooters or parts, and I know I'll be fine with that. YMMV. jm |
