I have a (new to me) Swede Mauser that appears to be in excellent shape, but  when I cock it, pull the trigger, and the cocking piece slams home, it pops the safety up.  So if I want to recock the rifle, I must switch the safety off (back down to the left).  Sometimes it just pops it up half way (about 45 degrees) and other times, all the way up (90 degrees).  Is there a fix for this problem?  If not, what part do I need to replace?  Thanks a lot for any help!

Well, I'm not sure what the problem is, but my GF is here tonight so I can't help you. But tomorrow night I'll drag one of my Swedes out and take a look at things and see what I come up with.

Is she gone yet?

Heh, sorry about that. Gone and back again. But I might have a handle on the problem. I need to find some pictures of the bolt.

But in the mean time....Have you had the bolt apart? If not, do you know how to strip it down? If not, go here and practice takingit apart till I get back.

Alrighty now.

In the pic below, see the groove in the back of the cocking piece? What's happening is the safety is rotating up and catching in that groove.

When the bolt is together and in the rifle, and the cocking piece is forward (trigger has been pulled), the safety should NOT easily rotate into that groove. You SHOULD be able to rotate it into that groove with some small effort. The safety "cams" into it.

The back of the safety has a partial circle on the back end that 1) blocks the cocking piece from going forward whe the bolt is cocked, and 2) can be turned into the groove when the cocking piece is forward t prevent cocking.

You can see the partial circle on the cocking piece in the this picture.

If the cocking piece doesn't go forward enough the safety can easily rotate into that groove. The safety is under tension when the bolt is cocked and the safety is on (blocking the cocking piece), and when the bolt is closed and the safety is on (the safety forces the cocking piece back slightly against the FP spring tension)

OK, now I still can't tell you what's causing the problem. But what I can tell you is that the reason the safety flips up is because that partial circle on the back is lined up with the groove in the cocking piece when the cocking piece is forward. It should not be so closely aligned that it can easily rotate into the groove.

The front part of the safety could be worn allowing it to be too for forward. The partial circle could be worn allowing it to align with the groove. The bolt sleeve could be worn where the safety contacts []it allowing the safety to be too far forward. Or something could be keeping the cocking piece from going forward enough, so that the groove will be aligned with the partial circle on the safety.

First I'd make REAL sure the inside of the bolt body is COMPLETELY free of any debris/cosmoline. If that's good I would next try another safety (a 98 mauser safety will NOT work). Then bolt sleeve. Then cocking piece.

Hope that helps. If not, send me a PM.

Gotta go, the GF is waiting
