My Father gave me a piece from his collection. It's a second model McKeever cartridge box. It comes with a few .45-70 rounds (still live) and the tool that comes with it. It's starting to get a little cracked. Nothing major at all, and quite possiblyt entirely salvageable. My questions is, how can i protect it without destroying the value? Mink oil? Shoe polish? It's in great shape, but i don't don't want to to deteriorate any more than it already has.

I wouldn't use anything like mink oil, neatsfoot oil, saddle soap, or similar products.

Probably, to stop the cracking I'd use a really good, high-grade leather "dressing" like Pecard's followed by a coat of neutral shoe wax.
I'd be very sparing with the dressing so as not to change the color or over do it.

Here's some good info that even mentions cartridge boxes:

I would caution that some late museum information says not to treat leather with dressings as normal maintenance, that long-term use MIGHT be bad for the leather.
