Is there anything that can be done for a M44 with some rust in the bore? A bronze brush is not removing it.

Would the rust make it unsafe to fire? Or just affect accuracy?

I've taken a cleaning rod with brush end and put it in a hand drill. Sometimes you can really clean ALOT of crud out that way but I'd bet its doing more hurt than help just because I've done it that way before. I use CLP in it and just spin away. The rod ends are cheap so I don't really worry about bugging them up.

I like to use JB Bore Bright for this situation. I clean as best I can with a brush, etc, then a snug fitting patch with JB worked into it and wet it slightly with Kroil. Another product that works magic on tough stuff is the Big 45 Frontier metal cleaner. It looks like a scouring pad. I cut a strip and wind it on a bronze brush. I hear it's also great for cleaning up surface rust without damaging the remaining finish (blue).

If there's rust, there's pitting, which may cause the barrel to foul more quickly, but might not affect accuracy, at least on the first few rounds.

I say clean it up and shoot the durn thang!

Make an Electronic Bore Cleaner, then take your bore brush and wrap some metal potscrubber pad around the bore brush and scrub away.  Make it tight, but becareful, I broke about 3 sections which ruins 6 pieces of bore rod this way, unless you have a one piecer.

clean it and wear glasses when u shoot it the first few times. use windex to keep the acid down when you kleen it after that.    hell i went to a gunsmith he said it just needs shot and it will be fine.
i shot it and after that the bore was fine.  wear glasses!!!!!!! first time out.

Ran a brush through it about 30 times and nothing moved. THe rust wasn't too bad, but it just would not move.

So I went and put 2-3 rounds through it and the bore cleared out real nice.

Ive used very fine breakfree soaked steel wool wrappped around a patch and a drill motor at slow speed.

I have had a couple in this condition, and I got them fairly shiny again (although there was some pitting) by persistantly working at them with bronze bore brushes and lot's of bore cleaner, some wd40 and anything else in the closet that looked like it might remove rust. I think I even gave some comercial paint stripper a try.

I guess the next time I will give them a couple of good stokes with a bore brush and a couple of rounds down range.
