Nice work. I'm have been pondering what to do if I buy a set of these fix-ems. I think I want to shorten the barrel right to 16" and shorten the front of the stock. I want a real blaster with a giant flame. I was thinkign about then threadign the barrel to put a AMD brak on the end. Problem is I dont have a lathe or any type of tools to finish the end of the barrel once I cut it off. |
| I think you would have to becareful with cutting the barrel down. I'm pretty sure that you have to make sure you leave the import mark on the rifle, and a very common place is just above the bayonet lug. In fact all my ufixems had it there. I do have an Excel COndition 44 that I got a while back that has it on the receiver. |

jerret, most of the work you want to do can be done with handtools. brownells sells all of them. with the m44 you just have to drive out the 2 pins that hold on the front site sleeve. take a hack saw and cut off the sleeve part of the sight so all that remains is the globe and tower. you can then press that back on to the step in the barrel. then cut off the barrel to a little ahead of the front site. it should give you a barrel length about 17-17 1/2 inches. brownells has the barrel crowning kit. brownells and a few othe places have kits for AKs for threading the barrels 14mm LH. my m44 measured .560 in front of the front site. 14mm is .551 of an inch. .560 is slightly bigger, but should be fine if you go slow and use cutting oil. i am doing this to one of mine that had crappy rifling at the front of the barrel. i only had to cut it back 1 inch to get clean rifling. |

advntrjnky: thanks for the info. I know you can drive those pins out and get the sight off, but I was worried abotu finishing the end of the barrel once I grind it off. It has to be smoothed back out and like rounded. I will check out that barrel crowning kit. I think that will do what I'm worried about. I see WJM still offers rented AK threading kits for under $20 i believe. One last worry of mine is the u-fix-ems. They may not have a bolt. I dont want to get 5 rifles to my house all without bolts or only 1 bolt. I dont care if they match I want to keep this project cheap, and have all the parts I need to make maybe 2-3 rifles. I was also hoping a amd snake brake would make the rifle even louder. It makes a amd louder than a standard ak. |
