I saw a WWI era Gew 98 in a gun store today for 180 bucks. It was a german manufacture rifle, it decent shape, allthought the forarm shows signs of being repaired in the past. I thought about picking it up, but i dont know much about mausers, so i dont know if this is a good price or not. Anyone here have a ballpark figure on what a rifle like that should be going for?

I picked up two at a show here in Ohio for 125 a piece, they were both Turkish imports, noted by the cresent moon on the reciever.  Alot of the Gew 98's were exports.  The two that I got were all matching and in very good shape with no repairs, and with cleaning rods.  Hope this helps, The Dr.

If it has the Lange-vizier (rollercoaster) site, is all matching & is not Turk marked it is worth big $. If it is mostly matching and has the Lange-vizier site, I-d say go for it. The common reworked Gew98's with the tangent site are kind of mundane.

ETA: if it is non-import marked, that could bump it into the must buy category.

it has the roller coaster site. I may need to stop by the shop again tommorow and see if it has turk marks, or import marks.

The only Turk marks on my two is a small cresent moon at the junction of the receiver and barrel, other than that there are no other Turkish markings.

Would be the only Turkish marking on a Mauser.  This would be on the receiver ring.
