| I just bought two Turk mausers that have some light rust in a few spots. Any suggestions to take it off without scratching up the metal underneath? |
| Brownells sells a super soft carding wheel. See page 223 item #360-164-581 and -631. I have used these. They are excellent for removing rust but not damaging the blue Will not remove metal or give a satin look. I have used them to removed some substantial rust. It's too soft for bubbled rust. |
That’s how I do it too. Some folks like to put the oil on the metal first, and then use the steel wool on it. Don’t know if that really makes any difference. Don’t get too aggressive with the steel wool, least you also start to remove some of the bluing. With a light to moderate touch this shouldn’t be an issue unless the blueing is really thin to begin with. Keep in mind that while you can remove the rust, it will have caused pitting that can’t be removed (not surprisingly – since pitting is actually shallow holes). If you’ve only got light rust, the pitting shouldn’t be noticeable. Be sure and keep a light coat of oil on the metal or the rust can easily restart. |
| Soak the area(s) in Kroil and then use a plastic, or better brass, bristled parts cleaning brush, a stiff bristle toothbrush will work , to scrub the area. Light rust comes off easily. Deeper rust comes off with a couple treatments usually. Leave a light coat of Kroil on it and any missed rust will come off in a day or two usually. Does very little or no damage to surrounding area. |
