I've got a Mauser with pretty good rifling, but the bore is dark. Any good ideas to lighten it up, other than just cleaning it while its still warm? Would gun scrubber/brake cleaner help? |

How I do it. 1 power drill 1 rod Several brushes. A couple of copper brushes that are for .338 rifles (assuming this is an 8mm). Bore cleaner. I like RB-17. Put the rod in the power drill. Put it on a lower speed setting. Get the over sized brush full of bore cleaner. Put in bore, run power drill, and constantly move in and out. Do not let it stay oin one spot. The first few brushes will wear out fast and become gummed up fast. Be sure to run a patch or two down the barrel between brushes. After a few larger brushes, I usually stick with the proper caliber. Continue for several more brushes if need be, but if you have made great gains, don't over do it, and if you are getting nowhere, I would call it a day. Many old bores will never come clean, but you can get many to look much better. Accuracy will also greatly improve. This reduces the hand work by about 2 hours. |

I found this on another board. I haven't tried it, but I heard it works. Originally Posted by SangRun Hunter Take a rod, preferably stainless steel. Get some rubber stoppers (rubber corks) for the breech end of your barrels. Plug the breach and fill with amonia. Put the rod down the barrel and hook a positive lead to the rod. Neagative to the gun. Use a battery charger for a car set on 6 volts or you can do 12. Some guys use 3 volts and 2 C or D batteries. If you use the the battery charger you need to check the mix more often. He goes about 5-10 minutes and empties the barrel. Black brackish crap comes running out of the barrel and it might take 4-5 cycles to get it mirror like. He used this on our Mosins which looked clean, but were not any where near clean. I have a rod ready to go, but I have not used mine yet even though I have a battery charger. Doing a semi-auto you will have to figure a way to plug the gas port of course. |
