Which is the perferred wood (Beech or Walnut)? They both look similar to me. |

Beech is a more dense, closed grain wood. It usually comes with very straight grain, too. This makes it stronger, more weather resistant. The straight grain also lacks personality, or figure. Walnut is more open grained but can be found with figure that ranges from staight to very fancy, swirl, tiger strip, flame etc. It is the traditional gunstock wood because it is rather dense and strong but also can be found with rather plain to extremely fancy figure. Beech would be great on a "working" rifle. One that will be bounced around, tossed around, and expected to get a few bumps and bruises. It would also work well on a target rifle as the closed, straight grain won't pick up ambient moisture as easily as walnut. It's not as good as a laminate or synthetic but it's pretty good nonetheless. Walnut would be most at home on a "presentation" grade rifle. But it is standard on most factory hunting rifles and shotguns, too. It's tough and pretty. It can be made into a fine target stock as well. But usually needs more maintanince to keep it good. |
