| I would really like to get a C&R license but was wondering......do you get visits from ATF as if you were an FFL holder?? I have absolutely nothing to hide but if they come visiting it is hardly worth it to me. Anybody? |
| From what I have read on this and other boards, it is almost unheard of that a C&R is checked by the ATF. The few instances I have read about said it was quick and painless. You have the choice of the agent visiting your place or going to his office. They only had their paperwork checked. |
May be more hassle then it is worth |
Having a C&R is wonderful and I am very happy I have mine. Believe it or not the ATF is very decent when you contact them if you need help or anything like that. I nor my many C&R holding friends had ever been contacted by the ATF regarding any C&R manner. EVER! |
No problem. If you want to make the process faster. Just go to the ATF website and print out the forms. Also, make sure you print out the Declaration of citizenship form as well. Its now a must with applying for C&R! |
See and again, I always obey all laws but that just seemslike more of a hassle then a $40 Russian rifle is worth. |
|
The subscription to all the ATF publications is worth $10/year. Gun show prices on most C&R firearms are often $30 higher for one (1). I've not paid sales tax on in-state C&R purchases from the major distributors either. If you think it's a hassle don't do it. I just sent my renewal check. -- Chuck |

Patriot, It costs $30 for three years and under $1.00 for the two stamps, and unless you live in the NYC area you don't get a personal interview. I can almost guarantee that your $30 investment will be more than made up in the discount from your first Brownells purchase. It's not just about getting a $40 rifle...hell, even WITH a personal interview, the act of having to order and take delivery through an FFL is WAY more hassle EVERY time you want a firearm that is C&R eligible. It's your call, but it really is an extremely small price to pay for the convenience and return on investment down the road. Edited to add: We're talking about a single visit during the application process (in NYC), not regular visits. |
|
I had a regular dealer FFL about 10 years ago, and have a C&R license currently. Even considering how much better things were 10 years ago, getting that dealer license was infinitely more hassle than getting a C&R now. We must be standing in a blind spot in the vision of Congress or something. It's a great feeling, finding something they haven't totally screwed up for no reason yet. |
| Oh it's only a matter of time before Lautenberg, McCarthy and the rest of the world savers figure this out and have a freaking panic attack, watch. I'm not really worried about the interview at all honestly anytime I have dealt with ATF they were actually super nice and helpful but my FFL dealer is really good to me too he will get me whatever I want whenever I want, I don't mind paying a $20 transfer fee to support a neighborhood gunshop. |
Yea but a Sistema delivered to you door for the effort it takes to fill in 1 line in a bound book made it all worth while...not to mention a EG Makarov for CCW or an SKS as a GREAT Bug out gun... |
| My uncle has had a C&R for at least 15 years. He owns a full automatic Thompson with it and has NEVER had the ATF visit him. He gets all kinds of things sent right to his door. He can order a Mauser rifle from a catalog as if it were a knife. They have his C&R on file and all they have to do is confirm his credit card and 3-5 days later UPS rolls up with it. I plan on getting one soon. :) |
You are kidding right? Hassle? Where? IF they even bother to check your books its a maximum of once a year. If thats a hassle you must be one lazy mofo. |
|
patriot73, We have tried to tell you the best things about having one. If your too paranoid or just doesn't feel like having something that is very fun, money saving and probably wont be around much longer if they clamp down on gun rights. If you don't want to do it, its is 100% your loss. More deals for us. I think you should just shell out the $30 and give it a shot for three whole years you will have a chance to try it. If you really think the $30 was a total waste of money dont renew it. |
a Form 5330.20 Now, the question....it asks for the name of the applicant, and the name of the "person certifying to citizenship". Is this me? Am i certifying to my own citizenship? Can i certify to my own citizenship, or does someoen else have to do that? |
|
You have to certify your own citizenship. Nuts isn't it?<G> Dennis Jenkins

Ok.... MAYBE you've answered MY question. I live about 45+ minutes east of NYC, and I'm waiting on my C&R. Today I got a phone messege from an ATFE inspector/investigator (which?) about setting up an appointment for interview or something this week. Which to be honest confused the shit out of me because I didn't think they did that. I mean I thought an insoection was possible AFTER you had your license, but didn't guess before. I'm pretty sure I'm coming down with the flu to boot... I don't want to postpone it if I don't have to (not that I'm on a rush), but..... ugh. Anyone know for sure what's involved and how long it should take. |

Out of curiousity, I assume the easiest way to find out who the local Chief Law Enforcemnt Officer is would be to call the local police dept? Or is there some super easy internet search (how is that for lazy!) Also, I assume there are no big issues with taxes when you have a C&R FFL? That was the biggie that I was concenrned about. I think I might do this- next thing you know I'll have a Russian bolt gun and a Nagant revolve in the locker! |

Well, what I did was an Internet search of who the CLEO was of my county police dept. Got his address and "Attn:" it to him on the letter and off it went with no problems. Also the gun auction sites have plenty of Systema's! |
|
What interview? Unless that's a requirement in NYS. Chief LEO? Slap the copy of the application in an envelope marked: Chief of Police, Your City, etc; or Sheriff, Your County, etc. You've no obligation to send it to anyone by name, nor do they approve or deny it. -- Chuck |
Got mine in hand in 10 days. A friend who sent his the same day took about 45 days. Who knows. If you haven't heard from them in 30 to 45 days, call them. |
SOG has them for now, but they are running about 400. Got one about 4 months ago from them for 300. Make sure you do not sign the original license. Make a ton of copies and send off ink singed copies to the distributors. |
|
Yep! What Deals!!!!I was up to the Kittery Trading Post last year (Kittery, ME). They had some bolt action Mausers on a rack on the floor marked $200.00 bucks. In their condition, they would be $50.00 - $70.00 dollars with a C&R FFL delivered to your door! It's worth the $30.00 dollars! The only drawback is the firearms normally come covered in cosmolene. It will take you about 2 hours to disasemble and clean em up. |
there's a sistema in the EE right now. Nice pistol, I have 2. |
| When I went to deliver to CLEO I was running around in the police station for over an hour. They sent me upstairs to where you drop off for CCW first. Then I was sent downstairs who sent me back upstairs, then then wanted to send me to the probate court for it, after several other run arounds they sent me into where all the high ranking LEO offices are I spoke with somone there who took it and said he would get it to correct person. Mail it and save yourself alot of hassle. They didnt know what the from was, they thought it was FFL form, a carry permit, and a class 3 form, finally somone knew what it was. |

I thought someone mentioned in this (apparently a previous) posting that there was a specific law book you could look at in the local library to verify it is OK to have a C&R in you state/county/town. Or, if anyone knows for a fact it is OK to have one in Geneva, IL (Kane County) I would appreciate the info. Gotta check with my apt. londlord (through an anonymous phone call- just say I am possibly looling for an apt.) if it is no prohibited in the lease. Looks OK, but don't want the CLEO or landlord shwoing up with a frown on their face! Dawg |
I know I am not a lawyer with your sate but.. If you rent an apartment from a person, it is YOUR domicile and as long as state and federal law doesn't permit you to own firearms you should be 100% legal with having a C&R at your apt. |
|
Well, I don't want to try that the hard way with the landloard and end up in a court case while my stuff is on the curb, if you know what I mean! But I checked my lease and doesn't look like there are any prohibitions on firearms. IIRC my previous apartment DID have a specific mention of no firearms on the premises, along with pets- whether that would stand up in court I do not know. Dawg |
That's pretty funny...As most wind up in the shitcan anyway! |
Yes, just find out who the CLEO is in your area and send them a copy. Then forget about the CLEO. ANY rifle 50 years old or older is a C&R. So, most M1's are C&R. (just verify mfg & s/n) |
Thanks for the reply. Wow i was looking at the form and it is pretty darn simple! If i get approved, what will i actually receive in my hands? a bound book or something? What is the typical turnaround time? I am in Louisiana. Thanks. I also found you need this form: www.atf.gov/forms/pdfs/print2.htm This is the citizenship form. |
|
From visiting other forums, I see wait times of 3 to 8 weeks. (mine took 8) You'll receive a package with a couple rules/regs books and an envelope with your license. You'll probably get the books before the license. DO NOT SIGN THE LICENSE!!!!!!!!! make lots of copies and sign them, NEVER the original! (what I did was scanned the license onto my computer in a hi-res .PDF form. When I need more copies, I just print them out from my computer) You need to buy (or make) your own bound book. I used my discount at Brownells to buy one from them. You also get a discount at Midway. The discounts alone at these two places will pay for the cost of your C&R! |
Dude your da man.... ![]() Anyone ever thought about doing a FAQ, sticky type documenting the process, forms used, do's and don'ts? Seems like it would be very helpful. I would volunteer if you guys wanted me to put something together and of course you guys review input after that. |
