I picked-up this Marlin Model 80 DL w/ extra 7-round mag at my LGS for $116.00 OTD this past Saturday. 100% complete. I suspect this one was made on the late 40s or early 50s due to no micro-groove barrel and lack of scope grooves.

The metal was near 95% but the finish on the birch stock was flaking on one side like a shellac finish sometimes does. I'm not sure what they used back then but it must have been either oil or alcohol based because DA cut it easily.

I'm usually hesitant to refinish a stock on a vintage .22 but as the metal was in such good shape I went ahead and used DA to get the old finish off and put three coats of Tung Oil followed by a couple coats of paste wax. It turned out right nice.

LOL....Despite what Marlin's "fax" page tells you don't ever let anyone tell you that the Marlin bull's-eye always means a walnut stock either. Birch and bull's-eye on this one.

She's a beaut! Great price for a rifle in that nice of condition with the original front sight hood and rear peep sight. Most of the Marlin's of that vintage I've found are usually missing one or the other.

Lots of shops pull the sights on the scope grooved models because they are worth more than the rifle. I guess the older M80s with no grooves are safer.

Those early ones had what they called ballard (iirc) rifling . Shoots just as good as microgroove .
