I have an older Remington 552 that I inherited. I took it out finally last weekend to shoot. Its an older version, possibly Pre-68 as I cannot find any sort of serial number on it anywhere on the barrel or receiver. Its in pretty good shape so I figured it would shoot fine. I ran through about 12 rounds myself. Worked perfectly. Reloaded it and handed it off to my friend. She got 2 shots off and it double fed. I cleared it(what a freaking pain that was) and fired a few more rounds. Worked fine. She fired 3 more and double feed. I cleared it again. Fired 1 round, and double feed. Clearing the double feeds was a major pain so I unloaded it and put it away. We were shooting Winchester 555 36gr hollow points.
Now, it has a tubular magazine, the only thing I can think of is the bolt is not returning to battery quick enough, allowing 2 rounds into the chamber. But I don't know enough on the design of the gun to know what to check or clean/oil up. Is there a return spring behind the bolt that could be worn? Thanks for any info. Matt |
