My biggest concern is reliability, not accuracy.

Thank you

By this I assume you don't mean a separate upper.  I have a Stag .22 lr bolt for use in my lefty Stag.  Once I found what ammo it liked (quite common on all .22 rimfires) it functions fine.  Kinda wish magazines weren't so expensive, but I figure it's worth paying for Stag mags to avoid any possible reliability issues.

In not sure if the Stag unit, for righthanded rifles, will work on other makes.

Correct - I'm looking for a drop in unit for a 5.56mm AR upper.

At this time there are several drop in conversions from CMMG which have different features.  The Alpha kit uses a Parkerized bolt and can use gray CMMG mags or the new 2 nd gen magazines plus BDM mags and drum.  I like the new X form BDM Mags with SS feed lips.  CMMG also offer their conversion in Stainless Steel and you can buy them with extra option like forward assist, LSBHO,  and locking chamber adapter.  Target Master and Ciener also sell conversions whic would be similar to the CMMG Alpha.  These all use the same mags

Try the "AR15" section >"RIMFIRE AND PISTOL CALIBER", more relevant to your question than the "ARMORY">"10/22 AND 22 CALIBER RIFLE" section.

I use the stainless cmmg without any of the other add ons and it has been 100% reliable

DPMS' latest dedicated upper (designed by Nordic) is the best in my opinion.
Uses Black Dog mags, bolt stays open after the last shot, and its safe to dry fire.
The reliability and accuracy is on par with the original DPMS kit from 2004, which was excellent.

Gonna be "that guy"

S&W M&P 15-22. Add up the cost of a full-featured CMMG kit with one of their Evolution mags (to get last-shot-hold-open), and you're within a hundie of buying a 15-22.

I'm using the most basic, cheapest CMMG drop in kit.  It works fine for me, last shot holds open, bought it for $150 shipped from grabagun.com a few weeks ago.  I use mine mainly to fling lead at short distances.  If you want to go for 100yrd shots, go to Century International Arms main website.  They have a complete .22LR upper for $250...cheapest I've seen around.

If you do get one, lightly oil it before taking it out.  They come bone dry.

I'm with you.  I had bought a Spike's kit and a bunch of BDM for my ARs.  got it tuned and running fine at the bench, and accuracy was pretty good out of one of my rifles.  But, once I actually tried to use it hard (Appleseed shoot) it started jamming up so bad I had to borrow an instructors gun.

Sold all of it off, was going to get a M&P1522, wound up with a GSG5SD.

Now I'm back to looking at them.  I like CMMG's upgrades, but reading on them, they still sound like they're a bit of a bitch to get tuned and reliable.  So, I think about a dedicated upper, but yeah, might as well by a MP1522, or 10/22 and trick it out for even less.

So yeah....dunno what to tell OP other than Good Luck!

if you go with a drop in kit or upper, you get to practice with your real AR15's trigger...the drop in kits using 5.56 barrels will probably be no more accurate than 3" at 50y... dedicated .22lr barrels much better... If you go with a drop in...for reliability I suggest buying or making a plug that allows your AR buffer system to apply forward pressure on the drop in unit...my CMMG drop in with dedicated barrel is very accurate, and has never hiccuped...
