So, I bought this 989M2 years ago in Oregon, but never could find the correct rear sight (Just found one today but he wants $100! ) and was thinking about Tech Sights, but one day I was thinking that I had this brand new Tasco illuminated 2-6X scope sitting around, and all I needed was a rail adapter. I posted here and ended up with the UTG adapter in the pic. The forward edge is a little too close to the objective for my taste, so I may turn it around the other way, which will also allow the scope to have closer eye relief. The sling is an Uzi sling I had, which is perfect other than being a hair too long. I might change it to an M16 silent sling. I picked up the missing rear sling swivel at Wally World a couple weeks ago along with a 325 rnd brick of Federal Automatch.

Next I found a cheapo VFG that I don't even remember where I got, but I think it was off the EE for $5. I rummaged around and found a Mesa Tactical pictinny rail the day the bipod arrived ($25 shipped off the EE) and today I went to the hardware store here in PHX and the guy took me right to the correct screws for .20 each. It took about 10 minutes to mount the rail with screws and a dab of Liquid Nails from a small $3.99 tube I got at the same time. The next step will be threading the end of the barrel for 1/2-28 so I can run a suppressor on there eventually. I plan to slide the front sight back closer to the stock ala Mini-14 GB and use an M16A1 FH (which I have several of) when I'm not running the suppressor I plan to buy in the next year, likely a Gemtech I can run on a pistol, the AR15 dedicated .22 I have in process or this rifle. Again, cheap fun. Anyway, here's a few pics. I figure my out of pocket so far has been around $50 including the ammo - of course, that doesn't count what I'd spent earlier on the scope and rail, but it's been a cheap, fun project. I can't wait to sight it in. Now to just find the damn allen wrench so I can flip that rail around...

ETA: I did find a 25 round Papoose mag and bought it today, so I guess I've now blown the $50 budget. Anyway, I'd love a Umarex HK416 clone eventually, but this thing has been simple fun, and used a bunch of stuff I had lying around. I am torn whether to buy the threading die and TAP and thread the barrel myself, or just pay someone to do it. Anyone here do this? I know how to do it - done it a million times, but the kit is like $55 - it might be cheaper just to pay someone.

ETA2: I took one more pic with the bipod slid forward and the VFG mounted behind it, a suprisingly good field setup, but for some reason my digital reader isn't working correctly right now.

I'm all for having fun with plinking guns!  Can't say I'm personally into vertical grips, but throw a flashlight on that rail and it'd make a good nighttime rat rifle for the local dump!

Get that thing to the field and find out what ammo it likes.
Wouldn't mind having one of those in stock condition.  Would look pretty good next to the M1.

Trying to thread the barrel yourself with a tap and die is begging for a baffle strike and ruined suppressor.

Depending on your equipment and abilities, yes. You can always put it in a lathe, turn it down and cut the threads that way, which is pretty easy to make concentric to the bore. Turning it down on a lathe and then threading with a die by hand is definitely asking for issues though.

Well, I understand that, so I mentioned the TAP guide. I have done this enough that such a guide makes sense to me, especially when precision is required to avoid exactly what you guys are describing. I am rethinking the purchase of a P22 in favor of a 'tacticool .22' at present. Can't do it right now, but am thinking about real utility. A suppressor is on my A list. Thanks for the input - anyone ever use the TAP guide?

ETA: I didn't think about turning the barrel down at all - maybe I'll have my FFL do it - he's  Class 2 mfg and  a big Class 3 guy - I trust him. He builds suppressors so  can do this. Great input, thanks.
