I was given an old 72 (.22 short, long, and long rifle). It's a tube fed, bolt action. No serial numbers, so I don't know when it was made, but I know they were made beginning in the 30's and ending in the 50's. It's not in real bad shape, but the action is ROUGH. Mostly just gunk and what not. However, I'm not really sure how to take it apart and begin to clean it.
Do any of you guys have one of these and can give me an idea how to break it down? This is going to be my son's rifle. I'd like to do a complete refinish on it. He's been shooting my great grandpa's single shot .22 bolt for a couple years and this will be a nice step up. A repeater, but not semi-auto, so he can't just bang away. |

Well, I was able to get the bolt out. As simple as pulling the trigger while pulling back on the bolt. Once I scrubbed all the varnish off and re-oiled everything, the action is very smooth. The bore is mirror bright, looks barely shot. The stock has a small crack in it. I think I'm going to make this a refinishing project my son and I will do together. That way he'll have a rifle in like new condition and the pride that he made it that way!
I also was able to determine that it's a pre-WWII rifle. Made between '39 and '42. |
