is it supposed to look like this? I can't figure out how I put together the trigger assembly incorrectly.
I don't think it is supposed to come down that far nor show that hole.

I bought an aftermarket one when I accurized my 10/22.  The aftermarket bolt catch, despite it's reportedly "quality manufacture" gets stuck like that all the time and I cant close the bolt.  It's maddening.

I am experiencing what you are describing but this is with the OEM Ruger one.

It is supposed to look like that with the bolt being held open. Is your bolt being held open when it is that far down? Have you done the 5 minute file job to make it an auto bolt release?

I had the same issue.  After smoothing out the angle on the upper back of the device it started working properly.  I'm referring to the spot where the bolt butts up against the hold open device when the bolt is in the open position.  It took me a few times of light filing and testing to get it right.  I didn't want to take off too much at once.

Auto Bolt Release Mod:

The release on the left has been modified. The one on the right is bone stock.

Is your bolt being held open? Have you done the above modification?

If your bolt is open with out the above modification, You need to pull the bolt back, and push on the upper part of the bolt release, where the exposed hole is, to release the bolt. You will feel the bolt release tilt and it will then allow your bolt to close.
