1954 39A. Gunbroker purchase that was cold blued when I bought it. He lost some of the markings on the barrel during refinishing, but I expected that due to the degree of polishing that had been done before the cold blue. It also had four holdes in the side of the barrel tapped for a scope mount(anyone know what type of mount attaches to the left side of barrel where it joins the receiver?). These were welded closed and polished, no longer there. Stock was finished in a light stain-almost a pine color-and high gloss polyurethane. Another thing that was changed. Overall, I'm happy for the $310 I have in it(gun, shipping, FFL transfer, bluing). The only thing I wish is it was a bit older. I want one that predates the micro-groove barrel for sentimental reasons. My grandfather's 39a is  a 1950, and the gun I learned on. He won't sell it, so I'm trying to find one just like it. G serial code, ideally(but unlikely) consecutive number." target="_blank">

Those holes in the side are there for a peep sight I think.  I'm pretty sure that Marlin puts them there themselves.  They usually put screws in the holes to cover them up, but whoever owned that gun might have just lost them.

I took a pic of my 1980 39A receiver for you to compare.

Nope, the factory holes are still there-these were in the barrel. I've only seen 2 model 39A's that had them. Four holes, in groups of two(each set about half an inch apart, the sets about 2 inches or so apart-like this––-     O   O––––––––––––O  O). Left side of barrel, breech end near where it goes into the receiver.I was told by one person locally that there was a common Weaver scope base that attached to the barrel in that way.

Those four drilled and tapped holes in the barrel were done at the marlin factory for use with a Weaver N scope mount.

Well, looks like I messed up then. Didn't realize they were factory done. Oh well, looks better without those holes when it will not be scoped. With the condition it was in before value wouldn't go much lower either.
