I just recently got a Savage MkII for some cheap plinking except I can't seem to hit anything with it. At 50 yards it shoots about 5-6" high and even then it doesn't produce a nice tight grouping, but a rather large one. Best I've shot with it is probably a 6" group at 50 yards. I've tried to fix the height issue by adjusting the rear sight, except it's already set to its lowest setting.

how are you shooting? off hand? sitting? is the rifle rested on something? have you cleaned the rifle? did you check if the barrel is jammed in the wood? I got a savage mkII package from Dicks, doesn't have the irons but came with a scope, the damn thing is dead nuts accurate at 50 yards. |
| I'm shooting with the rifle resting on sandbags, and it doesn't SEEM like the barrel is jammed in the stock. However I haven't given it a thorough cleaning so maybe that's in order. I've been using Federal bulk pack ammo, and that's all I've used so far. I do have some CCI Mini-mags lying around so I'll be sure to give those a shot as well. Thanks a lot for the replies. |

I have a Mark-II BV, with a Simmons 6.5-20 scope. I have shot nothing but S-K Standard Plus through it, and at 100 yards, in calm conditions, 1-1/2" 10 shot groups, most of them falling sub 1". Best shooting, out of the box gun I've ever owned. I ain't cleaning it or putting any other ammo through it until it quits shooting - well over 500 rounds and its still shootng great! First ammo I tried in it. Supposedly Wolf Match Extra is the same thing if you can't find the S-K. Costs around $45/brick when you can find it, I bought the rest of the case when I got back from the range.
Ammo makes a huge difference in 22's, and each brand seems to use a different lube and powder, which needs to be "seasoned" in the bore before you can evaluate accuracy. You really need to clean, and then shoot 50 before you try to shoot groups and evaluate your accuracy. Don't clean the bore until accuarcy goes away. 6" high at 50 seems wrong, thats for sure. file the rear sight down a bit ot get a taller front post? |

My Mark II FV is the most "ammo sensitive" rimfire I own.
It will print Federal auto match and 510 between 2-3" at 50yrds. CCI MiniMag and Remington Subsonic will print an average group easily covered by a quarter at the same range. I have not yet tried any high priced ammo yet. |

I've got a Savage MK II FV with no sights on a heavy barrel. I noticed my rifle would throw the first round away from the group and was stringing the shots. When I started to take the stock off to adjust the Accu-trigger I found the front stock screw not even finger tight. I adjusted the Accu-trigger to a lighter pull and assembled the rifle. The next time I shot the rifle I didn't encounter the first shot flier and it didn't seem to string the groups. My rifle is very ammo sensitive and prefers plain lead ammo to copper clad. My rifle will shoot Federal bulk into 5 shot groups of .75" to 1.5" with most groups over an inch at 50 yards. Other ammo is closer to 3/4 inch at 50 yards but I haven't bought any expensive Target ammo to shoot in my Savage. After tightening the stock screw I was able to slide a post card between the barrel and stock. You might check your barrel and see if it is free floated in the stock and the stock screws are tight. My rifle seems to shoot Blazer 40 grain lead pretty well compared to some of the other cheaper ammo. I shot these groups after adjusting my trigger and tightening the stock. The temperature was 83 degrees 60 % H with a light wind off the bench using a bipod and sandbags on the butt. I use a 3X9 AO scope 5 shot groups are measured center to center with calipers. Here are 5 groups .908, .455, .413, 1.255, 1.019. I'm not the best shot but I can tell the ammo causes the larger groups.
