Should I go Bull/heavy or fluted?

Why?

My rifle will be basically for general plinking, precision target and possibly a little bit of varmit.

Thanks

I typed a long reply and deleted it......get the best quality 20" heavy barrel you can afford and go have fun.....based on my experience.
           good luck!

The precision target part means bull barrel.
For bench, any length.
Standing, whatever you can hold up. I use a 21 1/2" .920 bull for silhouettes and Team Challenge.

Umm...

The Tacsol barrels are nowhere near as accurate as a much cheaper green mountain. The tacsols are nice because they are light, threaded, and short.

For plinking with a suppressor, absolutely get a tacsol.

For precision target, get a 20" Lilja. More pricey, but way more accurate.

I have a tactical solutions barrel and the quality is great, I haven't spent enough time with it to see how accurate it is.  I got a green mountain threaded barrel that i never even fired from hi-desertdog and it was garbage, wouldnt chamber rounds ( chamber was so tight that they got stuck 3/4 of the way in and the barrel needed to be removed to get the damn thing out)  That was a 177.xx dollar lesson in only dealing with reputable companies.

I have a green mountain factory tapered 20" barrel and its a tack driver.  If your not going to be carrying it very much then a bull barrel is ok, but I wouldn't say it is necessary to have an accurate little target rifle.

ETA GM barrels do have a tighter chamber but after 100 rounds it will eat any ammo I throw at it.

I have had numerous GM barrels and never had an issue where the bolt would not chamber a round. Trying to push a buulet in by hand can make the chamber seem too tight but they work fine. I had a factory barrel cut back .185". You can not chamber a round by hand at all but the force of the bolt chambers rounds just fine.

The only TacSol barrel I own is on a Ruger pistol. It has been fine and seems like it is more accurate than the factory barrel. Only problem I see with the TacSol barrel on the Ruger is that it is starting to mushroom at the chamber from the impacts of the bolt. I guess that is the cost of using aluminum to lighten the receiver. It still runs fine but when it does start causing issues I will buy another because I am very happy with it.
