| I just recently built a ruger 10/22 with a tactical soulutions barrel, hogue overmolded stock, and stock trigger. I have put about 300 rounds through it and am having a problem with my cold bore to warmed up point of impact. When the gun is cold the first bullet will hit about 6 inches up and to the left and then my second shot will hit about an inch low with the third shot hitting dead center with all shots after hitting nearly in the same hole as the third shot making very nice groups. The only thing that may be a problem is that I have not cleaned the bore in those 200 rounds as they were all shot today at the range. I am also using CCI stingers. Can anyone diagnose my problem because I am stumped. |

I have a "Magnum Lite" 10/22 Made by Magnum Research. Has a lightweight
graphite composite barrel. According to the paperwork that came with it, it states that it has something special in the way the the breech is cut that centers the round prior to firing. They say specefically NOT to use stingers in this rifle as the case of the stinger is slightly longer than standard ammo and will screw it up.... Could be that maybe you have a special barrel too??

Can anyone diagnose my problem because I am stumped. Stingers are the problem. I have never had a rifle that shot them well. Most people who try them find this to be true also. Depending on the chamber Stingers can damage match chambers because the casing is roughly 1/10" inch longer than regular ammunition. I think different ammo will cure the problem but if it doesn;t do some of the things I mention below to find the sweet spot. Try some other types of ammo. I would recommend some CCI Minimags or Federal Automatch to try first. They have always been consistent for my 10/22. Another thing to look at is to make sure the V block is snug and the barrel is not touching the stock, you may need and adjustable V block if the barrel is drooping from a loose fit in the receiver. If the barrel isn't touching the stock place a foam ear plug at the end of the stock under the barrel. Fire a few groups then move the foam earplug back an inch and shoot some more groups. You will find a sweet spot for the ammo you are using. When you change ammo you may have to do the foam earplug testing again to find what harmonics the ammo likes. As far as cleaning, most .22 don't need to be cleaned that often. I only clean when the accuracy takes a noticeable dump. In my 10/22 I have went for thousands of rounds without cleaning. Dolomite |

I agree with the other guys.
first-extra high velocity stuff like stingers-velociters-yellow jackets and so forth all are only fair at best in the accuracy dept compared to most high velocity ammo and downright poor when compared to most standard velocity or target ammo. Second- as others have said the stingers in particular are a strange size and don't work well in tight match chambers (most of the aftermarket barrels for 10/22 have a tighter chamber than the factory) Most rimfire will shoot off when cold . I have been told it is because of the wax or oily lube that a rimfire bullet rides on . This is also the theory behind why match rifles do strange tricks when switching brands of ammo (different lube takes some shooting to "settle" ) In my match Anshutz I will take 10 or a dozen shots before shooting into the sighter to check zero before a match . If I swapped ammo types I might run a couple of patches and then shoot 30-50 shots before trying to shoot a group. Many semi auto rimfire guns will have a different impact between the first shot (loaded by yanking back on the bolt handle when compared to the next batch of shots which are loaded by the action of the gun. When shooting groups with my 10/22's I will hand load the first bullet , then remove and top off the mag . Then I shoot that first hand cycled bullet into the dirt and then I have ten shots for the target that have all been loaded by the action of the gun |
