My grandmother's husband gave me his Remington 582 and asked me to zero it for him.  I doubt it's been shot or even handled for many years.  I took it to the range this morning and was unable to fire a single round.  I'm not even seeing a strike on the rim of any of the .22lr cartridges I tried.  Federal was the only ammo I had with me at the time.  Any ideas?

Is the bolt actually cocking and being released by the sear?  If so, and no strikes perhaps the firing pin was broken?  I would go to the Numrich/Gun Parts site and see if they have an online schematic to compare the parts.  I have a 591 5mm that had some kind of grease in the trigger which effectively froze it up.  The trigger seemed as if it was moving, but it wasn't moving enough to let the sear release.

Can't really tell you anything, but check to see if the firing pin is broken.

Here is mine.   Love it.

+1 on the firing pin. Hopefully you'll be able to fix it, if the 582 shoots anywhere near as well as my 581(same rifle, but has a 5 round clip magazine instead of tube) you're in for a treat. There aren't many "adult sized" .22 rifles around anymore, the 581/582 and whatever the single shot version was are great.
