This MagnumLite has caught my interest. Any thoughts on this one or experience(good or bad) with Magnum Research rimfire rifles? |
|
I have heard lots of good things about their barrels in paticular. I got to hold one of the Barricuda stocked models at a rimfire match the other day and it was scary light even with a aimpoint on it. I really like the look of the raised scope rail on the receiver. If you are a member of rimfirecentral you should do a search over there it will turn up a lot more results. If I remember correctly the triggers were not quite as nice a a Volquartsen but the guns shoot as good or better. I am really thinking about one for a steel plate/ fun shooter. |

I know it's an old thread, but things move slow in the 10/22 forum. I just bought one of these rifles used from a gun shop. After getting home with it, I noticed it had been abused a little. The previous owner had lost the bolt retaining pin, and fired the rifle repeatedly with the pin missing. This peened a small area in the back of the receiver where the back of the firing pin impacted it. I went to Wal-Mart and got a 1/4" drill bit and cut it down with a dremel tool to make a pin out of the shank of the drill bit. It worked like a charm. I also noticed that the back edge of the bolt had a little burr on it so I polished the burr off as well. Overall, it looks like MR uses the same supplier as Ruger for the cast aluminum trigger group assembly. It has the same markings as my Ruger 10/22, like t came from the same factory. (Either that, or the previous owner kept the trigger group and substituted a Ruger group before they sold the gun.) In any case, the trigger group parts did not look any different that Ruger parts, with the exception that the actual trigger weight was better than my stock 10/22 (though it leaves room for improvement). The receiver looks almost brand new, the anodizing is perfect, even on the inside. The machined receiver is very nice, everything fits precisely. The barrel is pretty light as well. It looks as though the guy who had it before didn't clean it much, either. The magazine supplied looked like it had seen a lot more use than the rifle, so I imagine this wasn't the guy's only 10/22. This would add a little weight to my theory that the trigger group might not be the one the rifle came with. So, after a thorough cleaning and having made a replacement for the bolt retaining pin, I took it to the range to sight it in. It was a windy day today, and did not have my range finder with me. I placed a target out at approximately 35-40 yards. After about 20 rouds of sighting in adjustments, I shot a 5 shot group using CCI velocitor that left a ragged hole you could cover with a dime. This was off of sandbags, squatting next to the bench because I forgot to bring a stool. ![]() At 75 yards, I ws no longer "grouping", but my shots were stringing out laterally to the right of the bull. I attribute this to the strong wind coming from the left. The good news was that at 75 yards in the wind with non-target ammo and no stool, the vertica dispersion of the shots was about an inch. On a calm day, with ammo the gun likes and a solid rest, (and a stool), I expect it will shoot within a minute of angle. That's plenty good enough for me. My regular 10/22 carbine is not anywhere near as accurate. I'm very pleased to have found this gem. If you get one, I doubt you'll be disappointed. |
I heard about some problems with the old hmr and 22 mags too. Now they use their own receivers(used to be rugers I think) and have a gas tap to help handle the pressure spike They look really nice, it will be good to see how they shoot |

I'm surprised to see this topic come back around, as there seems to be quite a lack of info/interest out there on these rifles. Thanks for the input, Bloen. The MagnumLite is really the only 10/22 variant that I've been looking into. It seems to have many of the features I would want in a somewhat custom gun at a decent price, and with less hassle. If I take the plunge, I'll keep you guys updated. |
