I plan on getting a 10/22 soon and I was wonder what is the best subsonic ammunition that would reliably cycle through the action. I appreciate the help. Look foreward to getting into the 10/22 scene. -Phil |
No I won't have a supressor for a while so you think the subsonics won't have enough pressure to work the action? |
It's possible. It's been a while since I fired subs without the can attached, but I recall having issues. A suppressor increases pressure so subs work better. |

I have run the CCI subs for a number of years in many different 10/22s and rarely have a problem. I did had some older Rem-subs that were nothing but cr*p in any 10/22 with or without my can. I have read that the newer lot of Rem-subs are better but have not tried them. |

I filmed some ammo tests yesterday to show the difference. First 5 rds were Fed Bulk Pac, Second were CCI Subs and Third was Rem Subs. 10/22 Ammo Test |
If you don't mind hand-loading them one at a time (or if you've got a bolt action) check out the CCI CB shorts. They *may* make a CB in long rifle, I'm not sure, but I haven't seen them anywhere. My father uses the CB shorts out of his 16" Remington single-shot bolt action for squirrel control and it's no louder than a serious air rifle. A short little pop, not even a firecracker. It'll more than do the job, too. They are fairly low-velocity, though, so you're looking at a range of 10-15 yards (which should be enough for most squirrels). It's a very good "compromise" round. And hey, it's only a few bucks for a pack to try out so what do you have to lose? |
| Super Colibre is some of the quietest stuff that I have fired out of my 22s but it is fired with only the primer so it is not recommended for rifles, as it may get stuck in the barrel. I am not afraid to use it in my bolt action, I just pull the bolt and make sure the bbl is clear. Not so easy with a 10/22. |
YES. Subsonics are still pretty loud unsuppressed. Your neighbors will definitely wonder what the hell you are doing. CCI makes CB Longs, that are the same length as LR rounds. They are pretty quiet. For very quiet, I recommend the Super Colibri. Damn near silent out of a rifle, but will not cycle anything. They also don't have much range. |
