I need help finding a slew of gear and I wanted to dump this as one thread so I do not spam the forum :D
Things I need and looking for examples and advise: 1.) Knee and Elbow pads 2.) Binos 3.) 3 point sling 4.) fore grip/bipod (are they really 90 bucks? If so I hope I kept the one I found and it is just buried in my sea bag) Cheap one I found off Amazon with decent reviews...thoughts if I do not still have the one that magically appeared in my coffin locker :D https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00UCFEGSU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2EKNW43BVT70W&coliid=I1D88N1QQIOLJE 5.) Chest rig for RBAV 6.) Mag pouches 7.) Flash light with lead for LE6920. sure fire is like 180 for mount and 400 for a flash light...anything that is sanely priced? 600 is ridiculous! 8.) Goggles? 9.) Anything I am not thinking of that I might want? EDIT: Also what rails should I buy for my LE6920? I know tons of people make them so their should be a good bang for your buck quality brand. All ready working/have pistol, rifle, holster, mags, optics, kevlar helmet, RBAV, plates, soft armor WIP, IFAK, boots, bayonet, and probably missing some stuff I already got. |

The mission drives the gear-- what is the mission?
What equipment do others in your agency use? Teammates? Instructors at classes you've been to? Let me be brutally honest. Asking such open questions like that makes a red flag to me that you do not have enough experience to be asking. The glaring examples are asking if you need goggles (only you would know, based on mission and anticipated hazards) and knee/elbow pads (great idea in theory, but in practice generally avoided unless seen as offering a significant advantage). My guess is that you are a new hire somewhere and you are very gung-ho to get all of your kit in order. Which is great, but be humble. I am also going to go out on a limb and guess that you have no recent combat arms experience, possibly no military background whatsoever. My advice is to slow down, do lots of observing, and ask lots of questions of the people you will be working with. After training with your team and seeing what works for other people, you will get ideas and try things and figure out what works for you. I am in federal LE and work with 99.9% combat veterans, and most of us sorted out what works for us way back during our military service, so we are an interesting group when we train, always swapping tips and information and constantly refining our own kit. Talking to others and seeing why they do certain things will open you up to learning new things that may be best for you. Over time your gear will evolve into what is ideal for you. |

Midwest has no deserts. Knee pads...well I have bad knees and wasn't sure if some nifty knee pad that actually worked existed. My experience is only what was issued to me and I haven't got the time to buy a million different things to try or the money. So hopefully some people on here have more knowledge on this. You ask me a tech question I can answer it (UBER, 1st, 2nd word latency of RAM, various types of encryption......) but I am not up to date with all the new crap on the market for tactical gear. I also need to buy all these in the next month because i want to train some before I travel again. |

Knee pads = Alta. You can get a pair for something like $20 on amazon. I've been very happy with the AltaFLEX pads with the AltaLOK connectors.https://www.altaindustries.com/product/knee-protection/altaflex-gel/altaflex-gel-coyote-flexible-cap-altalok
Goggles = ESS. There are airsoft clones with full ESS markings, so be careful about where you buy. I ordered a Profile Turbofan (with Cortex Shield for airsoft) straight from ESS a couple years ago. Cost about $180 for the goggles, plus $35 for the prescription carrier and $100 for prescription lenses, plus shipping. Not cheap, but worth it for my use. Mag pouches = There's plenty of options; if you want something with flaps I'd check out the Tactical Tailor Fight Light pouches; cheap and functional. Something like $17 per pouch, though I cut off the stupid velcro loops on the outside. |

Does mags fall out easily? Do they help with faster reloads? |

1.) Knee and Elbow pads you are in luck, uncle sam's retail outlet is having a 30% off sale for TODAY only and they've got alta knee/elbow pads for like $7 3.) 3 point sling don't get a 3 point sling, get a BFG Vickers sling 4.) fore grip/bipod (are they really 90 bucks? If so I hope I kept the one I found and it is just buried in my sea bag) good bipods are expensive, but you don't really want to put one on a 6920 unless you've floated the barrel. if you absolutely need a VFG, get a used KAC one from the ee 5.) Chest rig for RBAV TAG makes some nice chest rigs for very affordable costs, look through their site to see if any interest you. Being that the RBAV is modular though and you're really keen on having a lot of protection I'd probably just get surplus RLCS or SFLCS stuff off ebay and molle it to the vest 6.) Mag pouches see above 7.) Flash light with lead for LE6920. sure fire is like 180 for mount and 400 for a flash light...anything that is sanely priced? 600 is ridiculous! check the ee/ebay for surefire M951 or M952 8.) Goggles? I never cared for full goggles I always wore M frame 2.0s with the hybrid lenses 9.) Anything I am not thinking of that I might want? |

Does mags fall out easily? Do they help with faster reloads? I've only tried bungee cord pouches a couple times, but wasn't impressed. Nothing fell out, but it seemed harder to access the mag (finer motion to pull the bungee out of the way). Maybe with more practice. They are stackable. ETA: Forgot you asked about flashlights. The old budget go-to light was the Surefire G2 LED (and later G2X). It's a 1" body so you can put it in just about any scope ring, though I like the VTAC mount myself. Flashlight + mount will be under $100. https://www.amazon.com/Surefire-Tactical-Single-Output-Flashlight/dp/B009F7J8RA/ https://www.amazon.com/Viking-Tactics-Light-Mount/dp/B00EZRABHG/ |

thanks for the good info. i forgot about the glasses. Not sure if goggles or glasses works best for me. The chest rig was something i am debating. But i want one to have on hand if i find a good need for it and decide to change my gear up.
Why no foregrip/bipod unless a floated barrel? from what i gather floated barrel means it is free floating and nothing is touching it? interesting what you said about finer motion skills. If that is true they are probably bad for me considering my motor skills are moderately damaged. EDIT: lol docbach i thought you were being sarcastic about uncle sams and being a dick. That is a real place...crap missed the sale :/ Do you have any thoughts about the different kinds of Alta pads? Flex/multi joint/gel? |

My free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it, so:
1. Same with the Knee/Elbow pads. Get the USMC issue ones for under $20 shipped on Ebay 3. Ditch the 3-Point sling and go for a 2 point. If you just MUST have a 3-point, you can often find the excellent Specter Gear USMC 3-point slings on EBAY for CHEEP. I paid .98 + 5.98 S&H for my last one |

why wouldn't i like you mentioning those? Is it my hatred for the corps and coining the Retired DOD Contractor phrase? :D
this flash light? https://www.cheaperthandirt.net/product/streamlight-protac-rail-mount-c4-led-080926880597.do?gclid=CMv9oPK8kM4CFQunaQoduvgEWA thats reasonable and looks good. Not perfect but good. this? https://www.amazon.com/Steiner-10x50-Military-Marine-Binocular/dp/B00004RG7X EDIT: still not sure what floated is. I just bought the base 6920LE for 960 including FFL and shipping off gun brokers. I assume it isn't floated? |

"Free Float" is a reference to the barrel. Specifically it means that nothing (sling, etc.) touches the barrel forward of the barrel nut.
Pulling a sling tight can flex the barrel, and even putting a hand on the foreend can effect how the barrel vibrates when fired and change the trajectory. Getting a handguard that doesn't touch the barrel solves all that. I wouldn't worry about it for most uses; it's mostly a concern for competition and long range shooting. A lot (but not all) free float railed are lighter than non-freefloated rails, so that's also a benefit. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

as in long shooting...what does that mean. Some 300 yards is long others is 500 yards....others it is 800 or 1500 yards. I once did pull off all black on the 500 yard line. To me 500 yards is long. Does it affect 500 yards a lot? Is it something I should care about if I care about 500 yards? If so is it something that matters at 300 yards? How much does it cost to make the barrel free floated?
I greatly care about 300 yards and less but I may care about 500 yards but that is debatable at the moment. |

You're probably better off asking in one of the rifle forums, and even then you're not going to get a real answer. It's off topic for this section. IMO, if you're doing something precise enough that you want match-quality ammo, you should have a freefloat barrel. If you're doing something where M193 / M855 is good 'nuff, it's not going to matter much if the barrel's free floated. It's not specifically about distance. When I was shooting smallbore as a kid, how the barrel was floated was a big deal when trying to shoot a 1 MOA group at 50 feet. For a home defense gun where you need to be able to shoot an 8" group from 15 feet, doesn't matter. |

For what it's worth...buy once, cry once...
1.) Knee and Elbow pads Crye kneecaps...barring those, Black Diamond...I've never used elbow pads...ever 2.) Binos Has been asked a couple times...why binos? Just need to see farther? Maybe a good mono...but if you have to have binos, check Leupold for small size/great glass 3.) 3 point sling Has been stated...BFG Vickers or VTAC two point 4.) fore grip/bipod (are they really 90 bucks? If so I hope I kept the one I found and it is just buried in my sea bag) Hand stop...do you really need a bipod? Magpul, Arisaka, a billion other companies have great handstops, I have Arisaka exclusively on my rifles (mix of keymod and MLOK), work guns get Magpul handstop (Army gun with 7" KAC rail) 5.) Chest rig for RBAV Mayflower exclusively...UW Gen IV for work...EGL will make a super custom chest rig, but it'll cost you (and it's worth it...) 6.) Mag pouches Training armor has BFG 10 speeds, can jam anything I need in there...work armor has above mentioned Mayflower UW Gen IV 7.) Flash light with lead for LE6920. sure fire is like 180 for mount and 400 for a flash light...anything that is sanely priced? 600 is ridiculous! Surefire...if you're looking for budget, P2X in a VTAC mount...should cost no more than $200 total...but as others have said...the EE here is full of steals 8.) Goggles? Only wear goggles getting on the helicopter and getting off...Smith Boogie regulators ride on top of my helmet...all other times Oakley M2s (because I'm a sucker for free shit) 9.) Anything I am not thinking of that I might want? Invest in training...but watch who you're training with, the industry is full of pros, but also full of shills...don't fall in to the common trap of "the insert branch of service here taught me all I need to know" mentality...I thought that until I got in my first gunfight...and started to invest a LOT of time and capital in training Maybe already noted and I missed it...what optics are you rolling with on your rifle? Where and to what range do you intend to take shots? |
|
If i still lived on a farm i would set my own course up but alas i don't. I am looking into getting more training and finding a good range. I live around chicago so I know there isn't much good stuff around me.
I was just getting the ACOG since that is what I know besides iron sights. Why does everyone recommend BFG vickers...what makes it special? Something I forgot about but any decent gas masks? Figured while I am at it I can get one of those. A few years ago I was reading up on those but I have forgotten most of it. So this for 220? https://www.leupold.com/tactical/binoculars/bx-1-rogue-binoculars/bx-1-rogue-10x50mm/ or this for 400? https://www.amazon.com/Steiner-10x50-Military-Marine-Binocular/dp/B00004RG7X EDIT: Is it really 230 for rails? What length do I need for LE6920? https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/category/parts-and-accessories/parts-by-gun-model/ar-15.do?sku_instock_b=true&c=117713.117969.479569.485278&brand_name=Knight's+Armament+Co|Magpul&sortby=ourPicksAscend&page=all I also see tons of different vickers...which one? https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/search.do?query=vickers+sling&sku_instock_b=true |

Do you really think you need goggles in the midwest? I generally stick with decent safety glasses (I have Oakley M-frames and Revision), they're plenty good enough for mechanical breaching and being around flashbangs. My goggles stay in my locker. I only used them overseas when I needed to keep sand out of my eyes.
If you just want a pair of goggles, then get them. I only have experience with the older large ESS goggles and some newer smaller framed ones, so I can't really recommend a set. The ESSTAC KYWI mag pouches are amazing if you want open top. They're also rather expensive. The mags will not fall out, but pull out quickly when you want them. Flashlight: Check out the new Streamlight WMLs. (Edit: yes the one you linked above) The ALG rails are good quality and reasonably priced, especially if you can find them on sale. ALG |

I forgot about the glasses but i like goggles for the reason they stay on better and can work with glasses unless do you know of prescription based ESS glasses or whatever? IIRC contacts and shooting is a no no. |
|
Contacts are fine. I've been shooting with contact lenses for about 18 years now, never a problem. My shooting actually improved when I switched to contacts in middle school.
ESS does have a means of wearing prescription lenses with their safety glasses. The Army issued this: ESS. I always wore contacts. Prescription safety glasses are also available. |

If i am adding rails is it worth free floating it? I personally am not a fan of those rails your referenced but thanks. Mostly, due to I would like to keep something like KAC like on the M4. Also still what ;ength do I need for the LE6920. It has a longer barrel but does that affect the rails? Or do they keep those the same and just extend the barrel past that? IIRC i thought i saw different length pieces. |

BFG Vickers (I think) is the gold standard for adjustable two points...buy once/cry once...get one doesn't have built in hardware and make sure you've got loops on your blaster 7" KAC rails are on the EE here all the time for next to nothing...that's the one that'll drop in on your 6920...there are a bazillion other options out there as well...decide what you want/need then go nuts...but for drop in option, 7" rails are it (although the Troy Charlie and Delta rails drop on there and give you a rifle length fore end if that's your gig) If you've REALLY got to have a gas mask (?), back to buy once/cry once...Avon M53 Annnnnnnnnnd binos...those compact Leupolds will suit you just fine... |

The only thing I would add is to
get a convertible 2 point sling. It will allow you to work with weak side transitions, when used in the single point config. I like the Magpul MS3 style. Link John |

For mag pouches, I love my HSGI Tacos. Their versatility is top notch. They hold mags well, but they are a bit pricey. Honestly, I need to try these pouches in person...what are ones similiar to the marine corps that hold magpul mags and five-seven pistol mags. I'll just go with what I know for now...I assume those are super cheap comparatively? Why 2 point and not 3 point? Any video explaining how that vickers 2 points converts...i have no idea what you are talking about lol. FYI whats a price on that gas mask? I am seeing prices all over and not sure whats real or not lol. I knwo somethings can have fakes is this one of them or are prices all over the place? I like how MS3 wont catch gear vs 3 point. I don't really like vickers personally....at least for my usage. If i was going to go on patrol I see vickers being useful. Would a 1 point sling be better for me if I don't carry my rifle for long periods. If i ever used it in a home defense or needed it I would just be picking it up and using it. I don't plan on going on patrols or hikes with my rifle since I am not retired. So would magpul MS3 be better since I don't intend to have my rifle slinged very often? I really like the swivel of the vickers though. Can you get a swivel clip for MS3? swivel i think is a bad ideal on MS3 actually seeing the videos. BTW whats the point of shoulder transitions? I have never done one. With my damaged motor skills and eye sight I highly doubt I would do that so how does that affect my choice in slings exactly? I obviously have less experience than most here so that is why I am asking you guys :D |

I'll make my own gear and load-out set up for home defense later for future reference for others. EDIT: is this the rail I need? Tried lookign through EE but it is a mess....i am lazy lol. How much could I save anyways? https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/knights-armament-company-m4-carbine-rail-adpater-system-11-rib-panels-aluminum-black-98064-819064010340.do |

FYI, handguards are discussed on the rifle uppers, lowers, barrels, and more forum.
I would personally save about $200 and just get a magpul handguard instead of that KAC. I think that is the right one though, assuming you have a fixed front sight post on your 6920 still. Cheaper Than Dirt doesn't have much of a description. For a bedside gun, a single point sling or quick adjustable 2 point is fine. |

For a bedside gun, a single point sling or quick adjustable 2 point is fine. You can get light used KAC M4 or M5 RAS for $100, but yeah, I'd go Magpul unless you just have to have picatinny rails everywhere. I would not go so far as to call a Single-Point sling "fine". I'd be more inclined to say "adequate". They are really a bad idea and if you move around at all with one, you will have to still control the weapon with your off hand because it will be bouncing around everywhere. OP....save yourself grief and listen to us - get a 2-Point sling and call it a good day. |
| Op please listen to these guy's on the sling..I have a bag full of three point slings and parts. All given to me except for the very first sling I bought...I know of no one who after using my rifle with it's simple MS1 2 point who kept their 3 point. And as for a 1 point. Buy a cup and carry something to clean the mud out of your muzzle. |

These are fantastic. I bought them about a year ago for like $50, but they're worth 3 times that easy.
They are expensive now, but they fluctuate between $100-250 often. AZ842 |

Quoted: okay so i just realized the MS4 sling does not come with the pieces to put it on a rifle....what do I need to buy? Not sure why you would want the KAC rails if you're not freefloating since that's a lot of extra weight for little gain. Also, just a thought, but I find my BFG padded 2 point sling to be much more comfortable and easier to adjust for transitions than the MS4. |

Are you talking about the MS4 with the built in QD attachments? If so most modern stocks have a QD socket built into it, and if you're going for the Magpul forends, they make QD cups for mlok. Not sure why you would want the KAC rails if you're not freefloating since that's a lot of extra weight for little gain. Also, just a thought, but I find my BFG padded 2 point sling to be much more comfortable and easier to adjust for transitions than the MS4. Quoted:

And my bad, skimmed over most of the thread and didn't see that your rifle was a 6920. Are you going to be keeping the M4 stock or switching to a new one? If you're going to keep it, BFG offers a sling with just one sewn in QD and the other end has two triglides that you can use to thread through the slot in the stock and keep it secure. I don't see it on their inventory on their site, but I guess you could call them up and ask. ETA: I'm stupid and forgot I bought a regular BFG sling with the triglides and no QD and added the QD loop to the front myself. ETA2: Buy from somewhere else, not CTD. At the very least go Amazon since it's out of stock at Primary Arms and DSG Arms. SKD does have them in stock though. |

okay so what do I do for my butt stock? I am keeping the one that came with it. Sorry a little confused here. So call BFG and see if i can buy just their adapter? I'm in the Chicago area...Do you know where Maxons in Desplaines is? I can give some one on one time show you how I have all my gear setup and hook you up with some shooting comps thart will help you build your skills....IM me |

And if you're going with QD, buy this and thread the end near the adjuster through it. Any 1.25" QD loop will work fine, but I ordered both from BFG since I was ordering the sling there anyways. I think Amazon has their sling and QD swivel but with a more limited color selection. ETA: Here you go, cheaper by 5 bucks and no shipping costs if you've got Prime.

If you're really dead set on an MS4 sling, get a new stock with QD sockets. |

Dude, you have to break the staking on the castle nut, unscrew the buffer tube, put the endplate on and then install the buffer tube, endplate and castle nut for that to work. Quoted:

This is really the wrong section of the forums. You want to check out http://www.ar15.com/forums/f_3/4_Build_It_Yourself.html to talk about modifying rifles. |
