I tried a search but didn't find anything so excuse me if it has been covered.
I want to participate in some CQB courses and I need a ballistic helmet for them. I'm a civilian and would like some input about the different cuts/models available? I was thinking the MICH/ACH seems kind of standard but I have no idea what cut would work better in prone position? Thanks for your help guys! |

Thanks for your help guys! Any shoothouse facility will have loaners for students. If they dont I would reconsider the facility / training. That being said if it is just for class borrow it, dont sink the money into something you wont use again. If it is an item you will want on a more permanent basis I would recommend : High cut (makes earpro easier) rails (earpro and lights), lightweight (same as plates, 7lb plates suck, so does a heavy helmet) TW or Crye AirFrame top two. The ACH is an outdated design, plenty of good high cut ACH types on the market. PASGT...might as well be wearing leggings and have an M1 carbine. |

There's nothing wrong with the ACH, especially at the prices found on the EE. I wouldn't pay full price for an ACH ($500) but if I needed a ballistic helmet and didn't want to spend a ton of money I'd pick up a used ACH off the EE for $100-150.
They have the same level of ballistic protection as an OpsCore or Team Wendy, however, they're more expensive (by at least twice on the new market) while being lighter. The PASGT is much heavier while having a lower threat level then the level III ACH, TW, or OC (the Airframe is NOT level III, athough they offer a level III version called the ATX). I can't imagine too much of an issue going prone in a shoot house course. Plus, he ACH was designed around the needs of conventional troops needing head protection from artillery and frag while prone and in fox holes and as such the protection was increased around the side of the head. Finally, reading AARs from EAG shoot house courses Pat has consistently praised the ACH as being a cost effective solution for people who don't need a helmet on a regular basis, or for anything other than training. He's a big team Wendy proponent, but recommends most people find a deal on the much less expensive ACH. Me? I bought a mid-cut (2002 cut) ACH and actually find that I like it better than the high-cut (2001) I had, and both were better than my issued full-cut ACH. And, it was only $300, about 1/3rd of the cost of a TW, OC, or AF. If I wasn't a gear whore I would have just stuck with the full cut due to cost. |

ACH is a quality helm and can probably be found for around $100 used, maybe $200 new. You can borrow one but nice to have one in the crap hits the fan bag I suppose. Not terrible comfortable but for as much as you will wear it, itll be sufficient.
If you get into NV helmets become way more important. You need a lightweight stable platform and something with good padding and retention to allow you to wear it for hours. I use an ops core fast, but there are others options such as crye airframe or even a high cut ACH, cost varies from $300 to $1000+ |
| This is a timely thread. I have an older IIA PASGT and I was wanting something newer with IIIA protection (do they make III helmets yet?) that works good with night vision. I have a set of PVS-7's with the PASGT mount but eventually i'm getting a PVS-14 too. Comm's aren't really an issue but something lighter than what I have would be nice. |

The PASGT helmet was a miserable thing to wear all day. Miserable. Heavy, and the pads and suspension just sucked. I have a Team Wendy Exfil Ballistic now. It's IIIA and an absolute joy by comparison. Comes with a Wilcox W shroud (and a hefty price tag). |
