So, I've been looking more and more at the Crye AVS as an option for my next carrier (go big or go home and all) -
I actually really like the "a la carte" modularity of the AVS, because it allows me to put it together piece by piece, and disperse the costs of getting a new carrier, rather than dropping all the cash at once. With that being said, I think I've figured out how the system works, but I just wanted to check and confirm what exactly comes with what component, and what components are interoperable with what other components in what other configuration... If I decided to pick one up, obviously, the first thing I would need would be the plate-bags, and I would probably run it in what Crye calls the "Plate Carrier" configuration for a while before I was able to pick up the harness/chassis. What I'm trying to figure out is whether or not the plate bags, purchased on their own come with the shoulder straps and shoulder pads? Or do they need to be purchased separately? Looking at MM's review, and the "literature" available, it appears that they do - but marketing photographs for the plate bags do not explicitly show or state that shoulder straps for the plate carrier and shoulder pads are included with the plate-bags. Also, it appears that the three band skeletal cummerbund is compatible with the AVS plate-bags in plate carrier configuration, but again, it is not, that I can see, explicitly stated - and the plate carrier configuration is always shown pictured with either the single or double band cummerbund installed. Am I correct in assuming that the three band cummerbund will work as well? Finally - are the side armor carriers compatible with the plate carrier configuration? Or do they require the harness to install? Based on the manual and photographs, I'm assuming that they're only compatible with the harness, but can anyone confirm? Can they be used with any of the cummerbunds alone? FWIW, the sequence I'd be looking at with this would be to buy a set of plate-bags first, a cummerbund, and the MOLLE front flap, and use it in the plate carrier configuration first with my existing pouches as if it were no different than any other stand-alone plate carrier. Then I would begin to look for a harness, side armor, different front flaps, and other accessories, etc., but I want to know if there's a specific sequence I need to be buying the components in, or whether I can mix and match them as I go. Thanks, ~Augee |

The plate bags have the shoulder straps built in, which can attach to each other or the harness. The shoulder pads are sold separately. The shoulder stretch wraps come with the AVS harness. Quoted:

The JPC Long Side Armor Pouch Set works with the Crye skeletal cummerbund. The AVS 6x9" Side Armor Carrier Set requires the harness to work. If I remember right from my old AVS, the AVS 6x6" Side Armor Carrier Set will work with a two band cummerbund system. |

Thanks, This last part - I know you said you weren't sure, but to be clear, are you simply saying you remember it being inter-operable with the two band cummerbund, or that the 6x6" pouches will only fit the two band cummerbund, but not the three? ~Augee |
| Right. Unlike the 6x9 pouch, the 6x6 has a sleeve that the arms of the harness can fit through (same features visible in the Smart Pouch Suite), IN ADDITION to the two small Velcro straps that both the 6x6 and 6x9 pouches have. This sleeve is the exact dimensions of the AVS Harness arm, which is two rows of MOLLE tall. I've never done it, but theoretically you should be able to pass the two-band cummerbund through this sleeve so that it wouldn't sag like it would if you hanged it by just the Velcro straps. Hope this helps, but no guarantees. |

The AVS specific side armor carriers 6x6 & 6x9 are intended for use with the AVS harness. You can use the JPC specific 6x6 or 6x9 side armor carriers but you will need the AVS 3 band skeletal cumber. I seem to recall the AVS platebags come with the AVS shoulder strap covers(not the padded).
IMO in plate carrier mode the shoulder strap covers are sufficient and the padded ones suck in this config. Once you go to the harness you don't need the padded ones either. The harness includes the emergency doffing cable, single band cumber and elastic shoulder covers(real thin) |
