Hopefully this is the right subforum.
I want to buy a new set of peltor comtac earpro. I'm torn over whether I should get another set of the 3's like I currently have or if I should try the new comtac 4's. Do the 4s offer any big advantages or have any disadvantages compared to the 3's? How often do the buds need to be replaced? Etc. Thanks gang |

Big disadvantage would be not being able to double up protection. I am a big proponent of earplugs under electronic muffs. On an outdoor range with wide open spaces, its not as much of a concern, but indoor ranges and even a small range with a high surronding berm, the noise level gets to the point of doing damage with just a set of muff or just a set of plugs. Big noise makers like a short barreled 308 on an indoor range will do damage with only one or the other. Not immediate ear ringing damage, but over the long term, it will cause hearing loss. With the Comtac 4's, you only get a set of plugs. Why not just get the 3's and a good set of custom molded plugs. With E-muffs and molded plugs, I can carry on a normal conversation and hear all the normal noises just the same as without the plugs.
Out doors in the woods I just go with the e-muffs, but indoors is double no matter what I am shooting. |
