| I'm almost done with an LR308 build, and I'm looking for a chest rig or something similar specifically for a precision type rifle using 308 pmags. I'm thinking of just getting the standard HSP D3 carrier and the 762 version and just swap them put on my STT. Any other ideas or is that going to be my best route? |

How many mags and how much other gear do you want? I use a plateminus and TACOs so I can run 5.56 and 7.62. I'm looking for a HSGI small AO or BFG rackminus to set up similarly to my PC FWIW. I only have 3 AR mags on my STT right now so probably 3 or 4 308 mags |

One issue with which you will need to deal is that you are using 7.62 P-Mags, which are bigger in most dimensions than the usual metal mags which most 7.62 mag pouches are designed to take. For the most part, whichever pouch or rig you consider, you will want to have definite confirmation from the manufacturer--not vendor-- that the specific pouch/rig under consideration will fit P-Mags properly, that is, one-handed, easy extraction and insertion.
TACOs (HSGI) and KYWIs (ESSTAC) generally don't have this concern. I prefer the KYWIs, for various reasons, but YMMV. There is another alternative. Most single cell double AR mag pouches will accept a single 20-rd 7.62 mag with the only occasional problem being that the mag might drop down too far into the pouch, in which case simply insert some closed cell foam in bottom of pouch, or use MagPuls. Or both. In the case of non-adjustable flaps, the aforementioned will also help. Most double AR mag pouches have some sort of mag retention mechanism, sometimes a strip of elastic, sometimes (adjustable) bungee cord. Adjust to suit. I bought some of these pouches, originally made to hold 2 AR mags in each cell, because they were well-made and stupid cheap: http://www.supplycaptain.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=1004&ParentCat=66. After some experimentation, I wound up carefully removing the elastic mag retention fabric, and installing some 7.62 KYWIs. I added some 2" wide industrial sticky back Velcro strips inside the pouches to mate with the same already on the KYWIs to positively retain the KYWIs. Such Velcro available at Amazon. Now, they work perfectly; Easy mag extraction and re-insertion. The KYWI retains the mag very well, and the stowable full flap adds retention for unusual situations, such as jumping. I have little doubt that this pouch, or something similar would fit your P-Mags perfectly well, and do all that one could ask of them. Construction and materials of the AITES pouches is first-rate. Given the very low initial cost of the pouch, and adding the cost of the KYWIs and the Velcro, the final product is still considerably less in cost than many comparable pouches, and in quality gives nothing away at all. |
