Ok, Im really new to this stuff. I currently have a Mayflower APC and a D3 chest rig hooked up together. I need more space however as this is a work set up. I have just purchased a med pouch and need to put it somewhere. I tried putting it on the cummerbund, but that wont work. The med pouch needs to be where I can reach it left and right handed. With the D3, Ive got no more room on the APC up front. Out back wont work cause it needs to be accessible.
Recently I purchased a First Spear AGB so I would have a belt to mount my holster to. The more Ive been looking into this stuff, the more Im thinking I should look into a "battle belt" type set up to mount extra gear. Im used to having an inner belt, and an outer duty belt, held together by belt keepers. I cant see how you could use belt keepers along with a padded battle belt. Do you lace the normal belt through the loops and then just place the padded MOLLE sleeve over it? Im obviously missing how everything gets anchored together, such as a normal duty belt set up I guess. On a side note, how the heck to you guys carry everything you need? I seriously ran out of room with just the D3 rig, although the nice thing there is that that includes several pockets that can be utilized for many different things. |

When I start asking where I'm going to carry everything I can usually find something to get rid of. TheD3 isn't super modulare and while it might be a really nice rig it's lack of modularity is what drove me from it and could be contributing to your problem. A good battle belt provides a heck of a lot of space if managed well but just because you have the space don't rush to fill it. |
| Mission drives your gear. Also what do you need immediate access to. If no immediate access it goes in a pack. Most people carry way too much stuff. Guys who are not military or LEO but carry 10 mags on their kit. Hell LEO don't need anything close to that on their kit. Most military do not either. I have scaled back my load out over the years and am finally getting happy with it and it involves a minimalist plate carrier and a battle belt. I have the SO Tech IFAK in the small of my back. It's pretty flat and can also mount to the back of my plate carrier if needed. Yes it can be accessed from either side. I used to use a leg drop IFAK and these are a viable platform but can sometimes get cumbersome to carry, but that's just me. I have been privileged enough to get to spend some training time with some tier 1 type guys during their deployment work up and it's amazing how little they carry on their kit. Their missions are specialized of course doing mostly short direct action missions but they also understand there is great value in being maneuverable and fast and don't weigh themselves down with anything "extra" that is not mission critical. I know this is not a direct answer to your question but something to look at. How many mags do you need. If it don't go bang or treat holes in your body scrutiny should be given and think if it a need or a want or something you saw someone else do. |

Thanks for the help. With the D3, I obviously have 4 rifle mags and 2 pistol mags. I thought that might be a bit "much" so I recently ordered a triple Esstec mag pouch for rifle and a double pistol pouch. When I put the rifle mag pouch on, it takes up almost as much room as the D3, so there's almost no point in it. To really save room Id need to drop down to just two mags. Typically I realize that 1 in the gun, plus two spares would be enough, but then I just cant force myself to download that much. Im sure in most instances the magazine in the pistol would be sufficient, but I cant bring myself to do that either.
Im just now thinking about a med kit, tac munitions, etc... I found First Spear's missing links last night. Im thinking these might allow some things to go on a belt of sorts, along with other MOLLE attachment points. |
