My apologies if this has been beaten to death already. Is there a general rule or measurement to make for picking out which size ceramic plates to purchase ?

TIA

Yeah google it, there is tons of info out there. But the top of the plate should be close to level with you collar bone and the left and right side s should just cover your nipples. You should be aboe to side without the bottom of the plate touching your hips and should not be pushed up. Remember plates are designed to protect your vital organs, not to protect your from all injuries so don't go to big, on the flip side don't pick plates to small, some people do this to save weight but don't have adequate protection.

@Spartikis:

OP: It depends on your mission and VERY MUCH on your body type.  If you are sitting a lot in a vehicle, go a size smaller in the front.  If you are a big fella with a gut that sticks out farther than your chest, then I cannot offer you any advice.

I have been told while in the US Army that a quick down & dirty measurement is to measure the distance from the notch at your collar bone, down to your belly button.  Forget that nonsense about your nipples, that idiot has no idea what they are talking about.

Apply that measurement from your collar bone notch to your belly button to this chart:

From Bullet Proof Me:

4. What size are you?

A bigger body needs a bigger plate - but you will carry more weight. A "trick" is to use one size bigger on the back for more coverage where it won't affect freedom of movement.

•Most males end up with a 10" by 12", or the 9.5" by 12.5" Medium SAPI size - the two sizes are usually interchangeable but there are a few Plate Carriers that need the exact SAPI size, e.g., Crye Precision, or BlackHawk Lo-Vis.

•10" by 13" / Large SAPI for taller / bigger guys.

•Really big guys, 11" by 14" / XL SAPI

•Smaller frames, 8" by 10" or Small SAPI 8.75" BY 11.75"

Now purchase accordingly.

I'm 6'2" and 200 pounds, had a ex mil buddy help with my plate sizing and it turned out the XL SAPI was the size for me.
Does not interfere with my belt but I have no butt to speak of so my belt does ride all the way down on my hips.
On the advice of Bulletproofme.com,  I ordered only one XL plate to test out in front, this way if it was to big I could put it on my back and go with a smaller plate in front.
Wound up being perfect in front so XL plates front and rear, cost me an ~$10 in extra shipping, well worth it.

Oh watch out for the big bad internet guy

Btw making sure the nipples are covered is a standard method of sizing plates

Enjoy the read and let me know if you need help with any of the big words.

Pretty standard way of getting a start point for assessing the proper size plate for a shooter.

But I am sure you are right, we are all idiots.

I sincerely apologize Spartikis, you are not an idiot and I am an idiot for putting out bad poop on armor sizing.
