Well I've put together a BFG Rack-minimus and a TT Removable Operator pack, using the BFG chest rig straps on top with the two male buckles shock corded into the straps of the chest rig for the TT pack. I added a female split buckle to the bottom strap portion of the BFG chest rig to interface with either the bottom straps of the TT pack or the QASM buckles on my PIG.
Basically I can either use the chest rig as is or add the TT pack. Or clip the chest rig and the TT pack to my PC. I thought it was pretty slick for a theory test.

Now the shitty part, using the chest rig/ TT pack combo a few days ago I slung the rig over my head, like you would do with any rig that was a slightly heavy and you didnt want to get smacked in the head. When the rig landed on my shoulders the two female buckles attached to the top of the TT pack popped off. Dumped my pack on the ground.

So beware, there is a weight limit on those buckles, I only had one nalgene of water and a few hundred rounds of 9mm in the pack at the time, not exactly a ton of weight. Now, I was able to just snap the buckles back together again, however some of the 'teeth' sheared. I think Gorilla Glueing the buckles together is the next step as I really like the pack and use it alot, but I dont like being iffy about the weight limit on those two buckles. I did contact TT, basically as the buckles are from a 3rd party (ITW) they are not responsible for the buckles failing, which seems reasonable to me, I wont be pursuing TT to correct the problem as I have already pretty heavily modified the pack anyway so whatever warranty they may have is almost certainly waved now. Just an FYI for those of you using the TT and Grey Ghost Gear packs.

After similar TT removable pack issues and having some molle loops rip off of their extended operator pack im probably not going to buy another TT product.

It is unfortunate, as I really like the idea behind the pack and the ways it could be utilized.

I'd defiantly say its a design flaw and if I were to ever use mine that way instead of the straps I would probably sew buckles on rather than use surface attach buckles.

Well, I'm taking the pack to AT, hopefully the Gorila Glue is enough to hold the buckles together. If not I'm just going to shock cord the shoulder straps back to the pack and roll it that way.

Hindsight says I shouldnt have removed the plastic D-rings holding the shoulder straps to the pack.

Chances are good they will fix the buckles provided you didnt modify the buckles themselves. Ive heavily modified a lot of my TT gear and they have never told me no. Just be up front and all you should have to do is pay the shipping.

I would send TT pix of the failed buckles, and ask them to send new ones so you can re-attach them yourself.

Contact our Customer Service line (866) 984-7854 ext 100 or 117
We can square you away with new buckles and ship them out to you

We have been having some quality issues with those Surface Mount Buckles and just recently replaced them with a new design
Unfortunately the new design is still 6-8 weeks out from production

Tell them Ryan sent you :)

Gorilla Glue is already setting up, I leave for AT Friday and would rather have it usable than wait on replacements. If it fails again I'll pursue getting new buckles.

Ryan,
Appreciate that, I'll take care of it upon my return.

If I may ask, what is the new design?
Seems like to me, a sewn in female buckle would have more strength, even at the loss of the stability represented by the flush female buckles.

I talked to our Customer Service about this and from what I understand there was some confusion on which buckles you were talking about, they are squared away now and things are cleared up on our end but I still want to square you away

I am concerned the Gorilla Glue will not hold, send me an email with your address so I can have a set sent next day air. That way you will have them by Friday before you leave [email protected]

The new design is using the QASM that is currently on the side and a piece of webbing sewn into the seams to help secure it, that way it is easily field repairable or even removable should you not need the buckle.

Do you still have the Extended Operator?

I look at almost every warranty work that gets sent back to see if it is either a sewing flaw or a design flaw, that helps us on either fixing the problem or coming up with a better solution to address the issue.

Ryan, you are awesome, Tactical Tailor is awesome. You have another customer for life.

I'm looking forward to seeing the next iteration of this pack. You guys seem to strive to keep improving.

A few considerations,

A cinch strap or two would be nice, if the pack isnt heavily loaded it can tend to sag below my PC, I added two cinch straps to help tighten the pack down.

the plastic D-rings that hold the shoulder straps to the pack are both uncomfortable when wearing just the pack and also seem a little flimsy.  Having the option to also remove the straps entirely would be nice as well.

Just my thoughts from using the pack for a few years.

Our Fight Light and Grey Ghost versions do not have the Shoulder D-Rings, the original intent is so you can store them in the space between your back and the hydration bladder. If we made them completely removable then there is a possibility of them being lost or working loose under a heavy load and slipping off. (We've tested that theory a few times already)
Compression straps on existing packs can be made by using some Field Repairable Fastex Buckles and pieces of webbing, there are generous amounts of Molle on the bag that can easily accommodate a strap or two.

I figured you did it the way you did for a reason.
Thanks again
