I'm only 5'4" and I've been a plate carrier guy the entire time. Meaning I've once worn a vest and/ or duty belt. I have a plate carrier with side plates now that has just about everything I need on it already. I want to start running a battle belt as well. I'm looking for something that won't bunch up when combined with my plate carrier but is still large enough to have a few things on it and still fit me.

Thanks for the tips.

My first post here, and I found this thread by trolling through the "newest discussions" tab...but bear with me, and please don't hate if this sounds harsh or just plain strange.

Point is, you're 5'4" tall...meaning you're significantly smaller than what we know as "the average man".  In all likelihood, you're not going to find anything off the rack that's going to do what you want.  That's just the hard truth of the matter, and it'd be not much different if you were 6'9" and looking for something that would work for you.

I work retail in the automotive aftermarket industry (I'm not military, police, etc, I just like to shoot stuff!), and I deal with customers wanting parts for oddball vehicles all the time.  Having had my share of out-of-ordinary vehicles, I feel their pain...but also know the reality of trying to buy something no one makes.  You're gonna have to get something done up completely custom.  Here's where my advice comes in.

You could go out and commission any of the name-brand suppliers to make you a one-off kiddie-sized plate carrier/battle-belt combo that meets your needs, but you'd likely spend half your yearly wages on it.  You'd be better off finding an auto upholsterer to custom-make what you need.  I suggest an auto upholsterer because A) they'll have the machines capable of sewing ballistic-grade nylon, and B) they'll likely be able to get materials from their suppliers cheaper than you can get them personally.  It's likely going to cost you 3 or 4 times what you'd pay off the shelf and you'll have to make your own patterns, but you'll be able to get something that works for you.  Be forewarned, they'll likely look at you like you're insane!

Hope that helps...

Hey brother, I'm a shorty, too. Don't get discouraged - the stuff you need is out there! I normally recommend OSOE gear, but can't on this. I believe the OSOE Tapered War Belt may be the largest on the market, though he custom makes it for your waist size. A lot of folks on here bash OSOE - the owner, not the quality of the gear - so I won't start a pissing match in your thread.

I will be purchasing a new war belt here in the next few days, so PM me if you want the details of what I've found. Also, I can email you a pic of my current "War Belt" that is actually a duty belt. It works great for short folk.

Ha! I need to grow up in the vertical position...but after 36 years, I guess I'm about as tall as I'm gonna get. I find I'm plenty adult around the gut, though!

A plate carrier does not need to completely clear the shit on your belt. In fact, sometimes it can be better if it doesn't.

One of these days I'll do a write up on how to run a PC with a warbelt. But for now it's work work work.

this is true.  In my LEO job i wear an outer soft armor carrier with pouches and the inserts are pretty stiff so its similar to having a plate carrier but it rides a bit lower.  Between my duty belt and carrier i just had to maneuver gear around until it all kinda meshes, standing or sitting.  DEFINITELY make sure you can comfortable sit or bend at the waist when you're setting up your gear.

There are a few companies out there making belts that are actually designed to support the plate carrier. Which carrier are you using? Army issued?

Are you more of a stocky guy or a skinny guy? A medium on someone 5' 4" is kind of overkill unless you fill it out well enough.

eta: I'm 5 11 and I wear a medium. Just trying to get a picture of what we're working with. there are a shit ton of options out there. Don't take this the wrong way, but are you wearing the vest high enough?
eta2: this is about the most low profile belt I could find that is till meant to have shit hanging off of it. click

Stocky. 5'4" and about 155. The reason I got the medium is because TT doesn't have a small yet. I wasn't blessed with the body of a marine so I have to suffer with one size larger a lot of the time. I'm pretty sure is high enough. I followed the diagram in the hard armor thread and have it sitting at the V of my ribs to about navel. The problem Is I don't have much room when I run it with side sapis. That belt is almost exactly what I'm looking for. Appreciate the find.

Sounds like you got things figured out, then. Glad I could help.

Just out of curiousity, how tall and wide are your side plates? I only ask because the side pockets on that pc look huge.

6x8 or whatever the exact dimension is.

I imagine you about have those 6x8s all the way up in your armpits.

Try 6x6?  Will reduce coverage of critical organs but give you more arm range of motion.

Try a narrower 3" wide (1" webbing skip a row 1" webbing) perhaps War Belt, ride just below your PC, riding on your hips.

They sit pretty comfortable right now. The belt wag bag found is low pro like that. I'm just gonna try and see I I can find it cheaper.

Hmm...Does the cummerbund for that plate carrier has molle loops on it? You may want to check out some alternatives for side plate pockets if those ones are giving you problems.. Just a thought.

Haven't had any issues to speak of. It's mostly my size that gives me issues.
