Do such a thing exist that I can use with my son/wife at the range that are hearing protection but can also be used as communication purposes? Something like the Peltor Tactical but with communications not using an attached UHF/VHF radio system? I'm not sure if this is the correct section, but I couldn't find a good place to ask.

Sure, there are plenty of things out there you can use, with varying degrees of success and cost. However, I think you're kinda hamstringing yourself by not wanting to use an attached radio system.
How do you plan on sending signals between family members? Typically you'd want to use a radio of some type, but what are you picturing? ~Bill |

Which would be really cool, I just don't see it happening at this point. |

You should also have some hand signals for basic safety and personal issues just in case the electronics fail or your don't have them with you.
The other advantage is that if you should ever be in a stressful situation with them, you will have a silent way of communicating. Az |

They are basically hearing protection with a built-in FRS radio. ~Bill |
