I spotted this on some places for pretty cheap and have been thinking about getting a set as an alternative to ALICE gear. Anyone have a set they can talk about?

The canvas is heavy. weighs darn there 16lbs before you even start to put your loaded mags and other kit onboard.  Gets even heavier when wet then shrinks, making it hard to remove rifle magazines.

Good to know. Sounds like a big damn downside.

stoner63a said it all really.

I've got a set of it lying under the bed that can go (free) to a good home, but to be honest, for the cost of shipping plus a little extra, you could probably get a minimalist chest rig or 'war belt'.

There's also two of the 58 pattern backpacks, one 58 poncho roll, as well as an Arktis DPM chest rig in that pile.

I have an interest in the pat58 or the artis chest rig.

Can it be sent to Hungary?

Sure, I guess that should be ok.

You can send an IM to my profile if you like, in case the mods prefer this sort of thing in private or on the Equipment Exchange.

since the stuff was offered as a gift, and not for sale, it is all right.  Please conduct the rest of the transaction via IM.

Will do, mate.

For anyone in this thread that hasn't seen a set of 58, I just took a photo of the belt/webbing (might not have each type of pouch available, but there are several different ones), the poncho roll holder, and the big backpack thing. I think that's the full set.

As you can see, it's a bit faded and has probably seen some real use before my grubby mitts got ahold of it as a teenager.

As far as I am aware, it was replace by PLCE webbing.

I had a set of that in olive drab at the end of my cadet days, but I gave it all to a friend's younger brother who was joining the cadets.

Here's what it looks like in DPM (couldn't find a good photo of olive drab):

Those suspenders look like they'd be the tits. Are they compatible with an ALICE belt? Are they as comfortable as they look?

I had a couple of complete NIB South African cotton web gear set-ups quite similar to the Brit stuff pictures above.

I've handled the Brit stuff.

Different, grayish-green color, and, if anything, made of even stouter canvas. I sold 'em off, as I couldn't imagine carrying the web gear alone once it got wet. Very well-made, and best canvas I've ever seen on web gear, bar none.

Completely obsolete.

As for Brit nylon web gear, for some reason little seems to make it to this side of the pond.  You can get most anything you'd like from UK vendors, but the prices and shipping make doing so quite expensive.  Modern Brit gear is pretty good; on a par with USGI stuff, for the most part.  That said, it's expensive to obtain, and there is better stuff available here at considerably less cost and hassle.

I've not used ALICE stuff really, apart from a DPM camo water canteen pouch, that has the old style metal clips. I used that on my 58, though I may have bodge-jobbed (jerry-rigged) it onto my PLCE at some point.

With enough force and cursing, it will probably go together.

Don't hold me to that though.

EDIT:

As for comfort, sure, it was as comfortable as any webbing setup I have used, bearing in mind that things will shift around your body if the setup isn't really tightly put together and strapped to you.
