how hard are they to get?   and how much do they run for?   are they expensive?

They basically come in two thicknesses.  Level IV standalone and Level IV ICW (needs soft armor behind them).   You can get some fantastic ones (same ones MSA sells as their own) from Bulletproofme.com  They are $300 for a set of two.  MSA sells the same plates for $400 a piece!!  They are manufactured by LTC Corporation which is a military supplier and contractor.  I started off with those until I upgraded to some Velocity Systems stealth plates.   The stealth plates are half as thick but are not Level IV rated.  They are only rated for 7.62X39 and 5.56 (M855 and M193).   That is all I needed and it saved a lot of bulk.  But those are triple the price.

You specifically want ceramic?  DSG will soon be releasing steel/titanium side plates from IA, made of the same material as the LVL3 stand alone plates they sell now.  FYI.
