I know the military has the new GEN III ECWCS, But what I can't seem to find out is if they upgraded the foot/hand wear.  I know I've seen the Marines using some OR industries stuff but thats it.  Can someone let me know what current issue "GEN III" if you will hand/footwear is?

Thanks,
Squeeky

Its not too new they are already requisitioning for replacements I believe.

There is not exactly any set hand/foot wear. (whatever is allowed)

There are booties that are part of the L7 set however gloves are not part of that set.

Gloves and socks are not part of either set.

The OLD ecws set had these.

Current standard for issue (via peo soldier) is that troops in theater are being issued ecw gloves and ecw boots with liners. There currently is not packaged with the Gen III set gloves or socks. Just booties for the l7 set.

EDIT:

-I did find a poly-pro glove liner however it does not appear to have ever been issued with any ecws or pcu/apcu set...
-There is an updated set of ecw gloves with the same design as above just with acu colors and newer materials. Still not issued within the set. they are separate issue with the set if needed.

For real world use I couldn't see much more than a few good pairs of thick socks and good goretex boots being needed and a good set of gloves that approved for your use. Unless of course your in a climate that you can pull off a happy suit. Even then it would have to be well below zero and have to not be moving much. That stuff is warm...

Marines use a set up made by wild things called a Happy Suit that includes booties. There are some OR made cold weather gloves you only get when you go to cold weather training or real cold places

The SOF community has a handwear system by OR that they use.

Unfortunatly, for us conventional guys, a decent glove system is still not issued.  It is activly being worked, but nothing issued yet.  We still get issued the lobster mits and extreme cold weather mittens depending on region for cold weather handwear.

As far as boots go, still issuing mickey mouse boots for extreme cold weather, so no real improvements there either.

Apparently mickey mouse boots were done right  by the military

I got three different sets of gloves in varying thickness from RFI, ill take a pic when i get home.  The cold weather gloves seemed pretty nice, they arent vry bulky but they are warm.

In Alaska we got an assload of gloves, including some nice OR gloves. VB boots (micky mouse boots) for extreme cold weather.

My understanding is GEN III ECWCS does NOT have an official issue glove. However, a lot of my buddies have been issued the Outdoor Research Firebrand Mitts and Firebrand Gloves.

Yes gloves do not come in the cardboard box with the complete ECWS but there are several types of cold weather gloves that are issued along with it.

heres some of the cold weather gloves issued to me.

Can you tell me what those are left to right and your personal experience/opinion of each?
Thanks

I L/R

1. Dakota Nomex IIIA CW tactical gloves

2. Extreme cold weather gloves (dont know the make or real name)

3. MXC combat gloves (camelback)

4. Masley cold weather flyers gloves

Ive never actually worn any but number one, and I found them to be ok for CW, but big and bulky for regular weather.  The rest I just pulled out of the bag.  Im taking numbers 3 and 4 to a TDY assignment here soon, so ill be sure to post a report.  They feel good and seem to be a good compromise between warmth and dexterity.

I generally wear real thin gloves because my jobs require good finger dexterity, and I havent spent much training time in super cold, snowy weather.  Usually I just suck it up and wear mechanix gloves.

If you ever decide to get rid of the masley gloves (far right) and they are the size Im looking for let me know.

Loved the set I had and wound up losing one of the gloves .

The masleys are great and not very costly. The puffy ones are nice but a little thick to me.

The new Masleys are pretty nice looking. I never wore mine, but they seemed like a good upgrade over the old CW gloves.

I would highly recommend which ever glove one chooses its fire rated.  Lots of nice civiy style gloves out there, but they will melt in a heartbeat.

Number 2 are the cold weather flyer's gloves.  Just a cold weather version of the flame resistant Nomex gloves.
