I have a late 1980's production surplus CVC helmet. I've ripped the ratty comms stuff out and just have the ballistic shell. I want to turn this into a wearable range helmet and eventually have a NODS mount put on it for a D300 or PVS 14. my question is which pad set/chin strap kit to get for this shell. I've looked at Oregon Aero's site, but I'm not sure which set to get.
Also how hard is it to install the chin strap? How do I drill the holes without compromizing the ballistic integrity on the shell? Thanks for the help! ETA: spelling |

Talk to this guy, and see what he did. He's selling his in the EE, but I'm sure he could give you some pointers.
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=90&t=873415&light= I'm sure any pad set would work. Oregon Aero, Team Wendy, Skydex, etc... As would any ACH helmet strap. I'm not sure about drilling however. |

I did the same thing. Just high-speede as the guy who is selling his. I used standard ACH chinstrap and pads with the adhesive velcro circles. I did quite a bit of measuring and testing before I started drilling to make sure it was in the right place. I started drilling using a small bit, working my way up to the right size for the screws. I used general purpose Black and Decker bits. I didn't experience hardly any fraying. Then I simply installed using the supplied screws and hardware (balllistic rated). I have heard that it is good to use a bit of standard silicon sealant in the drilled hole to prevent moisture from being absorbed in bad weather. Don't know if it's true but I will do this myself before I take it out of my closet.
It took a little playing around with pad placement and strap adjustment, but It is fairly stable and comfortable now. I'm not sure if it would work with NVGs. The most play is the helmet wanting to slide forward. I don't have a plate even mounted so I can't tell you. |

I'm leaning towards the Team Wendy EPIC pad set and an Ops Core H-style strap system. Any thoughts/concearns/suggestions? |
