Ranger Green is a bit brighter then OD, and Foliage Green is a bit lighter then OD.

Think of it like this
Foilage = gray
RG = a muted olive green, think faded OD.

Smoke Green available from HSGI = is more Greyish Green

The darker pouches are Smoke Green, the GREEN pouches are OD.

There are a shit load of different shades of OD is why we stopped manufacturing in it.

Shit was coming out Lime Green at one point..

We have Smoke Green dyed and run through the mills for our specs and are constant now..

The trick here too, is know who is making the gear.
Gene's colors are slightly more unique than other makers. Heck I even had a OSOE 3 day pack in tan that I swear was freakin Yellow.
Not that any one is bad, just all a little different. ATS, BFG, DBT, Endom, Eagle, TT, HSGI, TAG, BHI, the list could go on and each will all have differnt shades of the same color, depending when it was sewn, per spec, what was on sale or the fabric lot.
It all varies.

Anyone have any ideas on how to "tone down" OD green gear without hitting it with Krylon?

Take to the pool....chlorine (NO BLEACH!!!!), Or into the ocean ......saltwater.  Expose it to sunlight. Don't be a purdy boy, use but don't abuse.  Another reason we went to Smoke Green.

Thanks for the tips.  I have other gear but I lucked into some new Eagle gear in OD.  It is a nice rig but just not the best color where I'm at.  I will try to "get it dirty" and see if that helps.

At a course I attended a couple years back, I wore an RG BAE RBAV with MC pouches, after TD1 the Ranger Green took on the dust and grime of the training venue and to the untrained/initiated it would have been hard to tell that it was ranger green.

Heres an example of EAGLE RLCS kit in Ranger Green and ACU uniform underneath

RLCS Kit by itself, note the differences in coloration due to material composition

the real difference would be what you see under infrared illumination correct?
