I have a beyond fleece, I forget the name, whatever the warmest one is. I think it might be considered high priced. It only has a thin liner, but I have used it in winter in the adirondacks and in summer in the rockies.
I read a review on professional solders where one of those guys critized the metal ziper pulls, they jingle a little, and that the one he had was too shiny when wet. I have not noticed that with mine. It did get clamy, but did not soak through, one time when I was hiking in constant pouring rain for maybe 6 hours. I also have a 5.11 softshell, but it looks like a police uniform jacket it you look closely. Loops on the chest for a microphone and zips on the side to open so you can access a pistol on a duty belt/open carry. Seems heavier than my beyond fleece, was much less expensive but not really low key in appearance. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

The Outdoor Research ones look nice too and I dont think they are as expensive. |

I just picked up a TAD Spectre. The thing is nice! A bit pricey but I plan on wearing this thing for years. http://www.tadgear.com/uploads/products/large/spectre_lrp_ueg_650w_1.jpg x346654 AWESOME jacket. The new rhino hide version is coming out on the 16th, and I'll have one days after
Nikwa owes me a jacket

Rode on my bike 30 minutes one morning in pouring rain and when I got where I was going took it off and my Explorer Half-zip was perfectly dry, not a drop had even soaked through the softshell. Just shook off the water droplets and was perfectly dry. Amazing. |

Nikwa owes me a jacket ![]() What is the difference between Rhinohide and Sharkskin? I suppose not much. Probably a cheaper fabric or something but TAD said something about it performing better, but don't quote me. As they said on facebook, when a product line runs out, they generally do not restock it with exatly the same thing. They implement changes, and restock it with a its more improved version. |

Very nice. Hence the V2,V5, etc. Wonder how many they make of a given product? Got any idea if the new Spectre will be made in the good ole US of A? |

Nikwa owes me a jacket ![]() What is the difference between Rhinohide and Sharkskin? Rhinohide is suppose to be highly abrasion resistant but when the material rubs together it is loud, sharkskin is suppose to be softer and quiet but wont stand up to as much abuse as the rhinohide. I have an explorer LT in rhinohide and can vouch for their claimes. I walked though a very thick patch of small trees while pheasant hunting and did not have a single snag or tear but while deer hunting in it i noticed it made a lot of noise while moving around. I don't have a sharkskin so i cant comment on those but plan on getting one next fall if i don't get a ranger hoodie instead. |

What is the difference between Rhinohide and Sharkskin?
Generally speaking, the Rhinohide is more durable, the Sharkskin is smoother and supposedly quieter. It isn't new for TAD; they've had Rhinohide products for years, including earlier versions of the Stealth and Explorer jackets. One thing to note - the Spectre LT in Rhinohide that is coming out in March is a lighterweight jacket than the Stealth or the Spectre LRP V2. The Stealth/Spectre LRP V2 have a fleece inner layer, while the Spectre LT will likely have some kind of moisture wicking lining (Coolmax had appeared on the Explorer LT jackets). The Spectre LT will be better for warmer climates and seasons than the Stealth (hence the spring release). |

I haven't seen anything official posted by TAD Gear, but based on past offerings I'd expect it'll cost the same as the Spectre LRP V2 - $289.95. Again, that's a total SWAG, but I seem to recall that the Stealth 3.0, Stealth Classic and Explorer LT were all the same price despite differences in material. We'll see. |
I have a Tad jacket, can't remember which one exactly it is, they had them on close out last winter and an OTTE Gear Alpine Jacket. I like the OTTE Gear better but that is just a personal preference. Both are nice, both probably overpriced, but OTTE Gear didn't get my credit card info stolen and don't support liberal causes like TAD. To be honest, paying as much money as these companies charge is crazy unless you are loaded, but if women can spend as much as they do on purses, then I can spend it on jackets dammit!
If I was looking for an actual jacket I was going to run hard, I would get something cheaper that I wouldn't care if I wrecked it. |

I noticed Greenpeace on their list of causes they support . Though on the other hand, they support Magpul and seem to have a decent support for RTKBA.

| I have a North Face Valkyrie that I wear everywhere. I've taken it skiing, stood around in the rain in it (it never rains in Seattle), it is a 0 CFM wind proof softshell which comes in handy in the wind up in Bellingham, Wa (right off the Pacific ocean next to the Canadian border) or riding in the Jeep with the doors and top off. It doesn't have a lot of pockets, or highly technical stuff about it, but it works every time and in every condition I've tested it in. Not to mention it has a lifetime warranty.... |

Its expensive, but for how much I've used mine and how good its held up I'd say its worth it. Valkyrie |

I've had an REI One Jacket for seven or eight years, it's terrific. +1 I just got this jacket and it's performing great. It kept me very comfortable shoveling snow in 25 degree blizzard weather. I had on some thermal underwear and a light fleece. http://www.rei.com/product/770914 |

ORC PCU Level 5. I didn't get it issued, but I got a good deal on it before I got out. On a related note, I just got a pair of the Orc Level 5 PCU pants, which had come in handy since last week's Snowpocalypse. Very handy to stay dry when worn over anything from long johns to jeans or sweats. I made some paracord stirrups to go under the insole of my boots; the stirrups are tied to loops on the inside of the pants. The stirrups hold the bottom of the pants down to minimize the amount of snow getting up around my ankles (I need taller boots). They breathe well but feel totally windproof. WAY cheaper than comparable softshell pants at REI, too. |

I did however get the l5 pants, and their damn well awesome. Used em snowboarding all day on friday. 100% dry by the end of the night. Their great. I wish I had the jacket |
| The only problem I have with the North Face/REI/Marmot etc offerings is that they rarely offer colors that most of us (it would seem) want. I'm talking mainly earth tones. I'm not real big on standing out like a sore thumb with my Indigo/Lime green/Purple etc clothing. |

I just sold mine on ebay that was that sage/ olive green apex bionic |
| I had one of the REI brand and it lasted for quite a long time. I wore that sucker everyday, with no consideration for it's longevity. Well it lasted and lasted and lasted until my girlfriend was so sick of it she bought me a Northface shell! I really loved that REI one, though after at least 6 years of use I had seams loosening on my sleeves and both hand pockets had holes from me carrying tons of sharp keys in them. I still throw it on when going out to grab a drink, so as to avoid getting my new one smelling too badly of smoke. Anyone know if REI has a replacement policy like Northface? Maybe I could get a new backup... |

I got an Arcteryx Bravo a couple months ago. It's comfy, warm, durable, and excellent fit the way it's cut (size large on 6'/180ish). Highly recommend it. Might fall on the high-end but sobeit, I've been a huge fan of Arcteryx for a couple years as I was impressed with the ILBE gear they designed. |
