What are your thoughts on handcuffs for non-LEOs? LEOS––what do you think about sheepdogs with cuffs? Are there any laws associated with handcuffs (CO)?

Anyone have input on brands/styles/holsters/key storage?

There are lots of squirrely college kids around here who I'm always having to talk to about noise/parties/acting like a dick to women and I know it's only a matter of time before it gets physical. I can't afford much in the form of security and I figure if they're OK, handcuffs are a cheap way of adding to my tools.

(I know low post, I'm more of a read and STFU kind of a person)

I don't own a pair of metal handcuffs, but I do own a zip tie set that I keep in my pack. I also keep a handcuff key in my pack just in case.

P.S. I wouldn't worry about your post count, everyone had to start somewhere.

I have handcuffs (Im issued them at work), and I also have flex-cuffs.  Honestly its probably easier to carry a pair of metal cuffs, then  the huge flex-cuffs I have.  As long as you are aware of the laws concerning the use of handcuffs, and what one has to do to employ them, you should be fine.  Get training (documented training) on how to properly use them, and know when you are justified in doing so.  I'm in Tx, the laws in your state may be different.  Just remember, if you mis-use handcuffs, or even detain someone unlawfully, you are opening yourself up to possible arrest and surely lawsuit.

Oh and as for types...
There are two basic types used by 99% of Cops, Peerless and S&W.

-Mine are Peerless

OP, if you choose to purchase/carry handcuffs (as a non-LEO) make sure you get some kind of training in cuffing/control techniques.

And like albatross stated, if you use them you will open yourself up to liability and lawsuits.

I undertsand your desire to be proactive in your community, but sometimes (in today's litigious world) it's best to just walk away.

I would have no use for cuffs. Take no prisoners in SHTF scenarios

Cuffs are something I would leave out. Flex cuffs would be duel use and easier to justify having to most. Our "flex cuffs" are nothing more than the large white cable tie zip ties. We had some of the true flex cuffs that used the key to open but I wasn't impressed with them. In my bag,and on my vest I have large zip ties.

If you want to detain someone I would suggest you go get some training on control holds. I find it ridiculously easy to hold someone in an OCCS hold with little to no effort on my part compared to what they are feeling, or even a simple arm bar on the ground wouldn't be that hard for you to maintain while waiting for the good guys to show up.

Gonna swhack every civilian in your way huh? Good luck Rambo, let us know how the mob treats you in the end.

But seriously, handcuffs are for cops and my fellow BDSM friends.
Use the flexcuffs (or just get some big zip ties). They're compactible, you can preset them or leave them flat and unlocked and weigh less than the braclets. Not to mention they have other uses.

Check you local laws. Cuffing someone under the wrong circumstances could lead to something like a kidnapping or unlawful restraint charge.

Thanks for the replys, I'll probably just snag some zip ties if I feel the need for them.
