Can anyone with real world experience in using the "old" ECWCS and new 5 piece sleep system tell me which one is warmer? I heard that the new one isn't as warm as the old one.

The old system is waaaaay warmer.  No comparison.   We have 1100 new systems now....they are't cutting it.

ETA:  Our SuppO had to acquire the older 3 piece system IOT keep the Marines warm is most of our AO.  The new system is a failure in our eyes.

Having experienced the 'old' mil-issue green sleeping bag, and then the 3-piece...

Because it can be made 'better'...

They have a five-piece now? I saw the foliage green/ACU bivvy version of the three piece before I got out in April.

I've got a couple of the woodland ones. I'll stick to those until I finally invest in a Wiggy's set.

The 3 piece is teh cats ass. I was warm in single digit weather, as long as you stay on that iso mat.

apparently a kid died in boot camp last winter from freezing in the middle of the night because they were sleeping on concrete pads and he didnt use an iso...

There's something new?  I've been out since 2006 and there was the black and green and the gore tex bivy cover.  So what else is there now?

Here's what the new 5 pc. set is

Comes w/ 2 stuff sacks. A small and a large so you can bring along only what you want and leave the rest behind.

Uhhh ... so it has five pieces, two of which count the fucking stuff sacks?  Are the bags themselves any different than the Black/OD ones?

Honestly, if you're going to drop your own money on a sleeping bag system, I would recommend checking out sleep system from Wiggy's.  I have the SuperLight FTRSS, and it rocks.  My wife had the Ultima Thule FTRSS until she lost the outer bag.  These things are way warmer than the USGI bags.

DAMN! Thats rough. I never used to use the dang thing until the first time I was in the field in single digit temps and near the ocean. I didn't think I was gonna make it. We had like 5 or 6 of us stuffed inside a M105 trailer so we would have as much body heat going around as possible. Ahhh the good ole' days.

I weighed both sets on a postal scale.

Both style patrol bags are the same @ 2lb 5oz.

Intermediate bags ACU style is 3lb. 11oz. , Woodland is 4lb. 1oz.

Bivy cover ACU is 1lb. 15oz.  , Woodland 2lb. 3oz.

Total weight savings is about half a pound. The zippers and pull strings are a little bit different also, but not much.

One good thing about the new ones is that there are really, really nice surplus woodland sets hitting the market now as units switch over.

I know, I just sold 8 of the woodland sets myself.

I liked the woodland type.  Used them at NTC in a January, worked great!!  Man, it was freezin' balls too lol

BLUF:   Somebody fucked up big time by purchasing these new systems.   Again,.....the system failed the individul soldier/sailor/and Marine.   Somebody's "good" idea is actually a HUGE POS that's still steaming.

Wouldn't he have died using the woodland set also??? If the cause was that he was on a concrete pad w/ no ISO pad underneath?

if it was that cold ,,more than likely.

Pads are a must ..even in warm weather. Ground sucks the shit right outta you because the bags loft/insulation is compressed by  your own body at that spot.

I dont use the MSS system...therma rest and 0f slumberjack bag works for me at 5.5lbs total vs 8-9lbs of surplus  bag for cold weather.even with a bivy its lighter

So are the US ECWS modular sleep system worth the money? Would you pay 200 plus for one?
I am also looking for a sleeping bag the is rated down to -10 to zero degrees, but 400ish is high.
I want something that is rugged and can take some abuse. I am looking to send 150 to 200.

Thanks

If you can get a complete (including the Bivy Bag) USGI sleep system in the old Woodland/OD/Black combination for under $200, I would say that it's totally worth it.  It isn't the best system in the world, but it's pretty good, and you can probably get it for a good price.

In the $400-ish range, you're hopefully talking about the Wiggy's system that I highly recommend.  Yes, they are more expensive, and they don't come with a bivy bag, BUT consider if any other sleep system is going to offer you the same guarantee offered by Jerry ...

ABOUT WIGGY PRODUCTS
By Jerry Wigutow

WIGGY’S GUARANTEE: Our Guarantee is for a lifetime of use. If a seam opens, the zipper breaks or the Lamilite insulation deteriorates (such as losing its loft or separating, clumping in one place or another), Wiggy’s will repair or replace your bag at no charge to you.

At this time, I know of no sleeping bag manufacturer that would even consider such a guarantee. The reason is simple: they already know the insulation they use will deteriorate. If you have ever compared information from the different sleeping bag and extreme cold weather garment manufacturers, you will see that they have never guaranteed the insulation they use, nor do they now.

The old three piece rocked.  I took it to Bridgeport and Norway, and never had a problem staying warm at night.

Now, that old green sponge WW2-vintage piece of shit it replaced on the other hand...

Yeah I like my old one better.  I just ripped a button out on my new Bivvy cover... I was not happy.  I use all of my old stuff.  The new stuff generally stays in a plastic bag.

So much for Wiggy's Guarantee.  I have a FTRSS that I was able to get issued while in the Air Force.  I have since retired and the zipper broke.  I contacted Wiggy's and was told to send it in along with $35.00 to cover the repair.  I aksed about the warrenty but he (Jerry) just said he needed the $35.00 to complete the repair.

As a side note, I submitted a suggestion to the military to replace the current sleeping bag system (Extreme cold and Intermediate) with the FTRSS.  It was denied and I contacted Natick labs as they were the reviewers, The said Wiggy's warentee was overstated.  All their repair requests were not honored.

My FTRSS is not really a great bag, the insulation has matted down and clumped in areas.  This happenede after the first washing and has never come back.  I used it in Alberta, Canada during a winter exercise one year.  The next year I went back to my Extreme cold weather bag and was never cold.

Just 1 persons opinion.

I guess I'm not tracking. Are  the newer system's in UCP cammo different then the the Woodland systems??

I always thought the only difference was they switched the bivy over to the new Cammo?

If there different, what's the difference? material? Manufacturer?

The way I figure it, if something comes out in UCP that is "new and improved", it is immediately suspect.

And we wonder why Soldiers buy so much of their own shit.
