So we all know there are two kinds of plates- ICW soft armor and Stand Alone.   I have seen guys wearing ICW plates alone and would assume they still give some level of protection without soft armor.  Let's not get into whether or not they are designed for it- we all know they are not.  Does anyone know how much protection the issue SAPI or ESAPI plates give when worn alone?  Just curious.....

They would probably be able to stop the same threats, but the level of backface deformation might cause serious/fatal injuries.

Those who wear ICW plates without soft armor are idiots.

I have seen some older Level 3 ICW plates that were Level 3 when worn with 3a armor or could just stop 7.63x39 stand alone. I think it was a older plate used with the ballistic nylon falk vests or PASGT vests.

The same can be said about those who post responses that  have nothing to do with the question......

what do you think level III is?-it stops 7.62 x 39mm (and other things)

Yes, and the plates I was talking about only rated for Level 3 (which is 6 hits of M80 ball) when used ICW with soft armor. In that case it was when used with the M1952A flak vest,  T65-2 carrier or 'Ranch Hand' air crew vest. When used as a stand alone with a web harness it was only rated for 7.62x39(and all other lower threats) NOT 7.62x51, which is the NIJ Level 3 test.

The plate was 'level 3' ICW it's carrier/flak vest.
It was 'level 3a' w/ a 'special threat' rating for 7.62x39 when used as a 'stand alone'.

Only pic I could find right now of the plate being used as a 'stand alone' w/ harness.
