Looking for a sub $200 machine to sew cordura and nylon webbing so it has to be pretty stout.  I dont think I need many features as far as stitch types go.  I have been looking around online but it seems that every model has horror story reviews.

yard sales are great places to find older heavy duty machines.

my dad picked up a old singer about 15 years ago with an electric motor that was later added and will punch through quite a few layers of canvas.

there is an ancient machine in my moms basement.  it doesnt have a motor.  are most older machines "heavy duty"?  also what about this one http://www.sewingsource.com/janome344.htm.  Yard sales are not an option. I want to buy one in the next couple days.

Seems doubtful that you will find a new heavy-duty machine at the price you are looking for.

Might look in this thread, there's some discussion of sewing machines for the kind of work you are talking about in there.

Go to one of these two wensites:

www.lightfighter.net and go to the roll your own forum and search for the machine recommendations...warning...they are rough on stupid people, don't be stupid.

or

www.diytactical.com[/url] and register in the forum section

They both have a large amount of information regarding machines and options.

My primary industrial machine is a Mitsubishi LS2-190 that I bought from the classifieds in my local paper for $160.00.  However, I was extremely lucky and looked a LONG time.

I used a Singer I bought at Walmart for almost 2 years beofre I killed it.  The only limitationwas the foot height.

Good luck

Yeah my heavy ass brother machine from the 50's won't keep its timing and headspace. 89.00 dollars later it went to the curb. Sailrite makes great but pricy machines for the type of work you want to do.

So I will be buying a 20-30 year old Singer today from a sewing machine shop locally.  I am not sure of the model # but the nice old lady showed me how it can do 8 layers of denim with no problem.
