Do you include a helmet in your gear? Which style? Which level of protection? PASGT Level IIIA or something else? I'm new to the topic. Here's a PASGT IIIA

I just have a protec that I painted and mounted the new style 4-point chin strap to. Then after going through all that work I found out they sell them already done and with rails and NV mount holes drilled for about $25 more than I paid for mine.

Here's a link to the one I'm talking about. PROTEC

I figure all most .mil lids are good for is frag protection and the higher dollar ones are IIIA and so on but in most situations I think I'd just need mine for noggin protection. I mean when I used to ride motorcycles I had (still do it's on the mantle) a $1,000 Arai RX-7 Corsair Haga replica helmet so I do believe in wearing the right gear. The chances of me needing to bullet proof my head don't justify the cost to me.

AK47,

Where did you get that 4-Point helmet strap system?  I have a helmet with the 2 -Point style strap and I am itching to replace it, but I have on;y come across 3 Point system.

it's on my 'to do list' right now all I have my self is a "bump" cap.

been looking at something like this

I have one - you can get unissued or lightly used, surplus PASGT helmets for @ $100, from reputable dealers (Army-Navy surplus) on E-bay. I figure my head is worth at least $100

They aren't that heavy either, YMMV. If you are wearin a vest, and plates, you might as well have one of these, although to most civillian applications, they are only useful bugging/bunkering in.

Edited to say, I have to get me a MITCH suspension and pad upgrade...

Bell "Faction" skateboard helmet...I got one locally for about $35 OTD from a sporting goods chain store.

The ProTecs didn't fit me right, either, so I went with the Bell.

i have a pasgt that was given to me. standard suspension with the 2 point chin strap.

i have considered upgrading it to the oregon aero kit but i just can't py that much for something i'll likely never use.

we did some extensive informal testing with them a couple of years ago. ballistic protection was pretty dismal. we found most pistol rounds especially 9mm would penetrate one side completely and enough in a skull the be lethal at 30 yards. most 45 acp was stopped but the associated headache would not be fun. NO rifle rounds were stopped at 100 yards.

these MAY be effective at glancing hits at angles but head on your still dead.

my personal opinion is they are better than nothing but may not be worth the extra weight if shtf.

I've got a MICH and a PASGT helmet at the house, but I doubt I'd actually grab one to use unless there was something crazy like artillary, mortars, or IEDs going off.

I'm an idiot. The helmet I have is the Bell Faction as well. I want a Protec though.

I got the strap from a member here who did a write up on the Faction helmet as a light weight PVS mount. He's .mil and picked one up for me. You can find them on ebay for around $35 but he sent me mine for about $15 shipped. I also had to go down the the Ace hardwear and pick up some washers and bolts. The ones that come with the strap are too long due to the Bell helmet being much thinner.

The PASGT helmets are only rated a II for ballistic protection.   But, better than nothing.

I've got a PASGT and a Marine Lightweight Helmet.  I got both of them for practically nothing, less than a hundred each.

I don't count on them stopping anything heavier than .22short; if they'll stop something heavier, great.  But from my point of view, they're best for protecting against glancing hits, running your head into something, or if something was to come down on your head.

If you want absolute 100% protection from small-arms fire, weld some hillbilly armor on a bulldozer.

Pussy...

I stopped wearing a helmet once I got off Uncle Sugars payroll, and have no need for one. About the only thing I could use a helmet for is if I ever take a class with a Shoot house that  requires it. and I would most likely get a loaner..

Just don't have a need to spend $200 on a MICH I will never wear....

I've got a couple. One Protech ballistic helmet that is the same cut and rating as the MICH/ACH and I have a couple PSGT. Their is a world of difference and I like the Protech.

I doubt I would ever use it stateside. I don't even have a helmet here in Afghanistan.

The USMC LWH is supposedly rated to stop 9mm ball.

and when you are being shot at with a rifle that pretty much makes it a heavy bump cap.

Yep, a direct/perpendicular hit too.

I don't know from how far though.

It's a baby step from non-rated/not direct 9mm protection, but it's still a move in the right direction.

Beerslayer - we still get shot at with pistols and sub-machineguns.  I know/have known several NCOs that have sucked up 9mm ball.

With that said, GENTEX is in the works on a couple of 7.62 rated offerings, at over 6 pounds .  Practical solutions on preventing fatal neck trauma on survivable hits is another story.

that 9mm rating is for a handgun. i an guessing a 9mm subgun with somthing around a 12-14:bbl would go right through them.

better than nothign but lets face it, if you take a subgun round the head you also likely just took 3-4 the face and chest.

better than nothing but JMHO, these offer more "feel good" that actual protection against real threat. with the added weight and reduced mobilty <i can't keep them out of my face prone even with the mitch> sometimes your better off with a ball cap.

not saying they don't have a place, i have one, just know what they will and won't do.

The lightweight helmet is good to go.  My first deployed with it in early '04.  Though, a Marine i was standing next to...took at 7.62 round through the front portion of the helmet.  The round clearly went through...but caused the round to slow down enough for it to "bounce" or be deflected off his skull...thus saving his life.  He had a nasty scalp/head wound....but it saved his life.  Mission accomplished.  I wouldn't go to combat without a helmet.  Period.

Great looking helmet.  Does anyone know if these are "legal" for ATV riding?  I didn't see if they are DOT approved, so they probably aren't..........

Helmets are made for stopping shrapnel and the like. I have 4 or 5 but only have them for the CDI factor. I see no reason to use one unless I'm required for work. No reason for more weight when I'm already a slow mover..

I've got my complete as-worn OIF1 helmet. Cover, NODS plate, unit markings, sweat rags in the suspension, everything. That's retired to museum status.

I'd like to pick up a used ACH on the local market, but XL's are hard to come by.

I have my Kpot from when I was in the Marines (signed by my whole platoon), and
then my Kpot from the Army (used in Bosnia and OIF I) and my ACH (Used in OIF III)
from the Army all retired to museum status as well.

I even have another ACH that is my personal one with my strobe and NOD's mount on
it. I wear a Large though... And I thought I had a huge mellon

check out this test. seams to stop most pistol rounds ok... although not guaranteed to but not much is guaranteed to just soposed to and for what an average civ might encounter in a SHTF situation for the $$ its not a bad item to have on hand.

I have several steel pots. McCords and Shluesters. I even have one that has a Hawley
liner in it. That one is my prize collection piece as far as helmets go. I also have some
WWI helmets, one of them is named to a soldier and I have another one named to a
SM from the Korean war and a couple from the Vietnam era.

I don't wear these either... well... most of the time I don't
