Looking around for a reasonably priced waterproof-ish backpack...was wondering if the Camelback packs would keep it's contents dry in a torrential downpour? Looks like they're just Cordura and the zippers don't look water tight either...

I ask because my university rents out textbooks and if there is any hint of water damage you have to buy the book instead of just paying a few bucks to rent it. I spent over $120 on a textbook last semester that had a some water spots along the top edge of the pages...

Anyway, was looking at a CamelBack Motherlode or something along those lines. Want something that I can walk in a heavy rain with and keep the precious cargo bone dry.

Any suggestions? The zipper on my old backpack is going bad...

I wouldn't count on it.

To be waterproof you're looking at something more like this stuff

No, Camelbak stuff isn't waterproof.  The Cordura in their mil line is water resistant for a little bit of time, but it will soak through.  The zippers aren't even close to anything like being waterproof.

Are you against wearing a poncho?

i can tell you personally that the camelbak stuff isnt waterproof. its pretty water resistant, but eventually water will get through and get your stuff wet. my motherlode taught me that the hard way.oh and zippers:not even close to waterproof.

Buy a regular backpack and put a good waterproof pack cover on it.

Sounds like a good idea...I could just keep the cover in the pack and use it when it was pouring outside.

Any suggestions on brand or where I could get one? Never really looked into anything of that nature...

If you only want a waterproof pack to protect your school books you might consider a trip to your local surplus store for a GI waterproof bag.  Just stick it in your pack, put the books or whatever else you want to protect in, and tie off the top.

Cabelas has several ranging from about 10-25 bucks.
