| Do yall perfer an open top mag pouch, or one with the velco flap? and why? I think I want an open top, but would like yalls opinion. |
okay, so here goes. it's going to depend really on your uses. What platform are you running? (m4, ak, fal?) How many magazines are you planning on running? what's your AO like? are you in woods or urban warfare? how much real estate on your rig are you allowing for your rifle pouches? There aren't a lot of manufactorer's out there (short of eggrolly, john willis and a few custom makers) that have more than a triple shingle (that's open top in gearese). So if your planning on running more than say, six; i would go with some with flaps. the ones with the flaps will normally hold 3-4 m4 magazines per pouch or two ak magazines per pouch. so if your running six across that would be 18-24 m4 magazines or 12 ak magazines. Next question you've gotta ask yourself is what is your budget for your rig? that's going to determine whether or not you go mainstream (hsgi, tactical tailor, bhi, or low budget ctd) or whether you go custom (eggrolly, john willis at the osoe, ice tactical, and a handful of others) this company sells almost all the mainstream brands. Skd carries quite a few of the custom brands (esstac and egl gear to name two) personally i, since i run an ak platform, i am using hsgi ummps. The Ummps hold 2 20 round or 30 round ak magazines just fine. the only thing i don't like about them is the buckle, but i haven't trained enough with them to get used to them... yet. customx on the equipment exchange can help you out with those. he's got the best price and is great to work with. When i had my plate carrier (which i sold cause i didn't like how it rode) i went the el asno barato route. I had a complete setup from cheaperthandirt.com. I was using the m4 open top triple shingle with 20 round hungarian magazines. had they not had the fin on the back they would have worked a little better. keep in mind though anything from that company is not battle proven, and should you find yourself in a literally explosive situation you will survive before your gear does. Any of the mainstream stuff like hsgi, tt, egl, esstac, osoe are all battle proven and are g2g. :last edit i swear: egg and customx are two guys that i will personally vouch for. they are both great to work with, and one day they will start sending me free stuff for all the advertising i do for them. haha. j/k guys. well about the free stuff. they are defiantly g2g. |
| as .mil i like the velcro flap, it gives more security while moving, jumping, fighting and falling. open top are great for swat teams and other guys fighting on a more linear space and are better for speed reloads. i will say whatever you decide, train with it alone! dont mix it up. you dont want to be on autopilot and try to get a mag out of a flap pouch when youre trained for open tops. |
Thanks, great info, Im thinking open top, since i'll probably run some carbine courses. |

If your .Mil.. Flaps for sure. The extra security is needed for the environments.. I like Open tops as they have fast access. The Eagle FB pouches are the best out there. They have a Kydex insert that holds the mag secure until you need it. A good compromise is to have the majority of your pouches with flaps (The can be turned into open type real fast by folding the flaps back behind the mag)and have 1 or 2 Open top. These are your "Go To" pouches and you feed them from the harder to access pouches as you need to. |
